I had SPD-Rs on my track and road bikes. Now discontinued but if you still have shoes which will take the cleats they're the nuts. Got some DuraAce ones off ebay for £20 a few years ago and the main bits of the cleats never wear out. You can get double sprinter straps which fit onto the rear of the pedals but that ruins the balance so you can't just plant your feet straight in. The tension will go pretty high anyway so chances are you won't need the strap.
Plain SPDs (smaller clear, normal mtb stylee) let your foot angle about a lot more, ok if you've got good ankles; the pressure's always right in the middle of the foot in line with the ball so on longer rider it can get a bit sore.
Only fixie polo bike I just use some cut-width DMR copies which does me fine for 100rpm in skate shoes.
SPD-Rs+trainers+rain = slippy
SPD-Rs+trainers better than SPD+trainers when it's dry.Look pedals generally suck.

Hi guys, Neal here.
Brum resident but working in Manchester at the minute and unfortunately riding a god-awful cheap and heavy folding bike as I need to get the train fairly regularly!
Below is my main ride though, a 1979 Kalkhoff coupe du monde. It's got a different chainset and pedals on it now, so I'll update the picture soon.
Moving up here full time in July so looking forward to some summer riding on her!

I ride a SS-converted Raleigh Record covered in black/yellow hazard tape, you may have seen it around.
Ha.. not the famous as-seen-on Bike Snob "ManchesterBike®"...? The one i photographed and then was sent to Mr Snob himself who chose to use it in his weekly quiz?

^ that is brilliant.
I may be a Gorilla at CM, although the mask really limits my field of vision, so I'd not like to ride in amongst CM wearing it. So, I'll probably be something else. Might Brompton it and go as a Penguin to match the colour scheme of that. Or could stretch the original idea, break out the Camo gear + face paint and go as a Guerilla...
Hello everyone BTW.

Hello all, after leeching information from the forum for a bit I've actually maned up and joined.
I'm studying Biomedical Science at MMU (originally from newcastle)
Currently ride a blb track with bullhorns wrapped in brown (Although I may be alternating between that and a ribble winter bike).
I may have been seen riding like a twat about the city and in case I've done something to someone I'm sorry.P.S. Just for a heads up there have been a lot of thefts around the main MMU campus. Especially outside the union, where today
there were like 4 cut locks about the place and my house mates bike was nicked from there a couple days ago. -

They're for staff&postgrads only, I don't know how likely it would be to get around that. They are awesome tho, and also have an all-important roof!

I've managed to get the number for the cage at the back of the main mmu building after much pleading and telling people how incompetent they are so it should be safer now.
@ rincewind: I have seen the dolan about definitely.

Sorry, just reread the page and your right.
Dont understand the justification for a £25 deposit though!?I'm a lab tech in EPS, you?

Maths postgrad. Riding a black Langster w/ sky-blue rims, usually lock up in the bike shed opposite the Aquatics Centre car park. Yeah I hope the word 'deposit' means you get it back, but then in that case I don't really see the point of it either!

I'm pretty sure you get it back, I looked into it a while back, but the sheds near me were full at the time. You used to be able to get your swipe card activated for the cages under the arches up by Sackville for free (although they changed this 3-4 months ago and I'm not sure what the new policy is).
I used to work for EPS, now I'm over in Humanities.. (oops!)

Apologies if it seems like this is hijacking the thread.
I'm positive you get it back but I dont understand the need for it, all postgrads&staff will have swipecards so no need to provide one and it is hardly an admin burden to activate it.
I'm fortunate I have somewhere in my building big enough to store my bike so I dont have to use the hut/shelters. -
• #546
They can only have so many people per-shed and your card is only activated for one. I think the deposit is to try and stop people signing up and wasting spaces.
Just found this:
Is a payment required?
Yes. A nominal returnable deposit will be made (payment by cheque only) to encourage regular use of the facility. This will be returned when the user identifies that they no longer wish to use the facility.
-
• #547
it is hardly an admin burden to activate it.
Yeah exactly, that's why it doesn't make much sense. If you've made the effort to go to the car park registering office that'd be enough to put off timewasters without needing any money being involved

What's up with most fixed riders i see... I'll be riding through town and I get people looking/judging/watching/analysing parts on my bike more than saying 'hi'. If I had a good bike i'd understand but it's not that great!
Someone just say 'Hi' to me - haha.
Black tall guy on a blue singlespeed. LOL not missable..
