  • many years ago but a good few years after the incident I was hanging about in Banbury library for some God forsaken reason and I happened upon Schumacher's autobiography. If memory serves me right he explained the incident and then went on to say that he and batiston became friends and was even invited to his wedding. A few years ago I read an interview with Batiston and he said that he hated Schumacher who never contatcted him to apologise let alone get an invite to his wedding. What a cnut.

    According to Tor!, an excellent history of German football, when Schumacher was told that Battiston had lost 2 teeth, he replied "there's no compassion amongst professionals. Tell him I'll pay for the crowns."

    Afterwards the ref apparently said:

    “A few days later the video from behind the goal was shown in Holland. If I had the opportunity to watch it back? I think I’d have given Schumacher a red card. But in the match I was convinced I made the right call.”
