Wanted: OT: Large portfolio needed urgently

Posted on
  • Hiya,
School sprung a review from the independent examining board on us, and my work has gotten bigger in the last few term. I'm looking for an A1 portfolio but might be able to make do with an A2. I really need to buy one, but if you would be willing to lend me one for the week that would also be helpful.

    Thanks!

  • Hey,

When do you need it? I'm away until Monday but I've got one you can borrow / buy.

    Let me know.

    Cheers,
    G

  • I'll need it first thing tuesday morning or last thing Monday night, let me know if that's possible...thanks!

  • Ooops, I've just recently chopped mine up because I couldn't afford to go out any buy some of that lovely tough black plastic casing to make a Bakhtinov focus mask. Sorry about that, otherwise I'd have had one to give away.

  • ack! Oh well.

  • i've got a pleather one with quite a few of the plastic sleeves in it, it's either A3 or A2 - can check later

  • I brought one from a company in London, if your based there took a few days to get here (bournemouth) perhaps you could go and pick it up from them? They sell selves and high quality leather display portfolios up to A1 if my memory's right.

I took the last A2 one off them two weeks back but they should have their stock back in.

Here is the prices my uni quoted me:

    PROFESSIONAL DISPLAY PORTFOLIO
These are top quality leather-look black portfolios with rings inside to hold display sleeves.

    RRP
    A1 52.45
    A2 35.65
    A3 25.15
    A4 20.95

    PORTFOLIO SLEEVES
Acid free clear PVC sleeves with black paper insert. Sold in packs of 10. You will only need these when buying a Professional Display Portfolio with rings.

    RRP
    A1 33.00
    A2 17.00
    A3 11.50
    A4 7.00

They sell ones with or without rings as well and some photography professional boxes give me a holla if you want any more info.

If you talk to the people on the other end nicely i got some good discounts on postage etc.

Hope some of this quick search helps you!

  • this was my original plan, but as I'm pretty in debt at the moment I'm hoping that I don't have to spend £83 on a portfolio just now.

  • Cardboard + rubbish bags. Job done!

  • The ones with the rings are worth the extra if you can afford it I think.

  • Yeah, tbh, I'm not in a position to be fussy. I know I need to buy one anyways, but this is a pretty bad time for me to be buying much of anything, I've just given up booze to try and continue to be able to eat.

  • Do you mean one of these Nhatt?

If so, Andrea has a couple at home that we could probably lend you for a week or so.

  • Hi Nhatt,

I would advise two things, firstly do not buy a folio with the metal rings as these can damage the work, secondly do not put your work into plastic sleeves. Basically 99% of institutions use fluorescent ceiling lights and these reflect badly on plastic sleeves. If an institution has a few hundred folios to look through they are not going to fanny around taking work out of plastic sleeves to get a clearer look.

If you are submitting work that due to fragility needs the protection of a plastic sleeve I would suggest submitting good quality documentation instead.

  • Well, its only the 20 of us that they will be looking at, its for checking our progress on the course. I'm a bit worried about my large charcoal pieces surviving, so I was going to use sleeves.

  • could also tape two bits of A1 cartridge together to make a protective sleeve that way.

  • i may have some things knocking around.
il check in the next half an hour.
if i do it will be A1 or A2 with plastic sleeves.

  • Nhatt

I have one you could borrow for a fair while. I almost never use it. I could talk charcoal preservation with you too if you like. Totally agree with ben on plakky sleeves and rings... Shiny glare and dents are a bad thing. Mine is a rigid black A1 job, think it's got my name stencilled on it somewhere but you could gaffer it out. Happy for it to be of use. Mile end. I'm in my studio all day today late, all weekend and most of next week (almost always late at the mo too).

Pm me if you need to.

  • Another problem with the plastic sleeves is that they do more harm to charcoal drawings than not. Static and the sliding in and out of the sleeves can be a real bugger. There's some fairly tasty ways of fixing / varnishing / lacquering drawings to make them resilient.
