  • A question for people using drop handlebars or bullhorns. How wide do you ride, for cycling on the road.

  • 380mm B-123AA

  • Interesting, I am only 5'8" but cant get comfortable on anything narrower than 42cm.

  • i used to run like quite narrow risers, then really wide 42cm pursuit bullhorns, on my new bike il be running 38cm b123's.

  • I think it's a 45cm that flare out at the bottom, and I'm 6ft.

find it more comfortable to handle poor road surface.

But guess what? everyone's different, some find narrower comfortable, some wider.

  • 40cm drops, im 6ft and ride a 58cm.

  • What a great thread.

For the record, 40cm, although I would've taken narrower if they existed (Profile Airwings)

  • road 42, city-track 40, thats are my drops, the hibrid-mtb has 60cm

  • Poke your fingers into the front of your shoulders, and find the bones. Ideally your bars should be the same width as the distance between these. I'm a wide little fecker, but my shoulders bones are'nt actually that far apart. In fact only 41cm apart, despite having a 44" chest. So I have 41cm bullhorn on the fixedl, and 40cm drops on the roadie.

  • What smallfurry said. Except mine are different size.

Shall I start a what size are your shoes thread?

Yes, do a "what length stem do you use?" one whilst you're at it.

I find that the internal length and width of my shoes, should be chosen according to the external length and width of my feet.

But you never said which size....

    ...you're tearing me apart!

  • 38's. Happy days.
Depends on how strong your scapulae-supporting musculature is....

  • This is actually something I was thinking about yesterday- how exciting your life gets when you are stuck at home.

Is this one of those things that make a huge difference if you are 1cm one way or the other?

I would imagine that there would be a noticeable difference between 40cm and 46cm, but going from 42 to 44?

Like a alot of bike fit details. It depends on how far you're going.

  • 40cm drops on one bike, 42cm on the other. Doesn't make a rat's arse of difference

    Prepare for Death By Tedium!

My alloy FSA bars are 43cm c-c just before the hoods.

I've been looking at some carbon Ritchey bars so as to take advantage of the different material- getting rid of road buzz mainly, but also losing a small amount of weight and gaining some bling.

However, Ritchey bars are either 42 or 44cm c-c at the hoods.

My FSA's flare to 44 c-c at the end of the drop, which is where FSA measure them.

The Ritchey's also do this, so the 42cm would be 43 at the drop, the 44 would be 45.

So- do I choose 1cm smaller, or larger?

    Does it matter at all?

Do I have way to much time on my hands having to keep one foot elevated whilst sat at home?

  • My bullhorns (Profile Airwing) are 42cm wide. I initially thought maybe there were too wide but after using them for a while I've started to like the size.

My fixed bike came with 42cm (c-c) Deda bars. Felt far too narrow, swapped to 44cm's and immediatley felt better. Although I do have exceptionally refined tastes, so this might not be the same for everyone.

  • I use briefs with a 40cm deep pocket

    Wait, two points.

    1) Have you actually measured the distance between your shoulder bones?
2)Your FSA's start at 43 and flare to 44cm, and are classed as 44. If the Ritcheys do the same, and are measured the same. Then surely a 44 Ritchey will be 44cm at the drops, and 43cm at the hoods. Am I going mad?

  • The Ritchey's also do this, so the 42cm would be 43 at the drop, the 44 would be 45.

Only if Ritchey measure at the hoods, and not the drops.

  • Which is what they do, hence my confusion.
