Re: the NAS vs big external drive, as mentioned above, I'd like something to store my music and films, which would ideally be accessible by desktop, laptop and ps3, and also to be my archive/backup.
I've bought some big TB drives for the desktop as I'll be working on FCP alot so will keep video/audio files on them as I work and then delete whatever isn't required and archive the final project and any offlines/comps that I created so I can recreate the project if required at a later date.
Getting a NAS seems to be a good option as most only seem to be a couple of hundred quid more expensive than the external TB HD, but give you more alternatives for streaming/networking etc. Then becomes a case of which one and how reliable/useable they are...
again any opinions/experiences welcomed.
in terms of getting a RAID setup, not sure if that is a step too far for what I require..

raid only if you need a fast read/write for off line editing. if you are using a laptop there are some nifty FW800 double drives

sorethroat: Remove the battery asap and leave the unit without power for a week or so (in an airing cupboard or similar).
Don't dunk it, that won't do much anymore, any residue from the beer (sugars) will have clung on by now and the water doesn't naturally penetrate anything, etc (it's mainly used as a technique to dilute/wash away liquids immediately after a spill). You could open up the unit and use a mixture of compressed air and deionised water to give everything a once over, but you may do more harm than good (depends on your level of competence).
If you're lucky it'll boot up just fine once completely dry, if you're unlucky the main board will be damaged, if you're really unlucky your HD may be caput (you can still recover data from it though, but would have to pay hundreds of pounds for a specialist).
Thanks very much Jono. Sure this has been asked before but I panicked and didn't search first. Thanks again.

you need something with a stable UPnP for the PS3.
The only way I got around this was to build a little media PC that sits in my bedroom.
Media Player links up all media to my PS3 and Xbox 360. it's got mine and my girlfriends music libraries on there. I can network attach MAC and PC to it, and i got the whole thing built for less than £300. The only problem is that to network attach the drives you stick SMB on the front so the MAC knows it's looking at an NTFS drive. it can read and write to this with no issue. Simple with Windows 7.
The other plus is that the PC plugs into the TV in the bedroom, so we just watch Sky online in there (essentially multi-room) and TV catch-up see saw and iplayer. indoor antennae just don't work in my area, so online TV was the best solution.

I have to admit my next pc isn't going to be a mac now. They just don't seem so ground breaking any more. Also for what I'm using computers for a windows machine makes sense.

i need to see how the lightning thing is implemented before even contemplating upgrading (i should be doing my usual 3-year laptop usage thing) if it will work superfast with an external drive and run the monitor then i'm interested. i don't know about the cores yet as more isn't always better and the 13 is faster. depending on what apps you use it makes a big difference as they don't always make use of all the cores.
the reality is i will probably not bother and just stick a hybrid drive in and maybe even a small 64gb scratch SSD where the media drive is. seagate are having firmware issues so i'm waiting for them to sort it.
starting to wonder if i'll ever buy another macpro? i can see myself having 2 laptops a 13 and 17in instead. (plus a 24in monitor)

Not ground breaking is a bit harsh.
Thunderbolt (lightpeak is such a better name) will transform I/O device interaction in the next 12-18 months. -

What mac is groundbreaking?
Thunderbolt - New MBPs
Thinnest / lightest laptop - New MBA (and old MBA when released)
First MultiTouch gestures - All current MacBooks
Backlit keyboards - Macbooks
First true all in one - iMacetc etc (just of the top of my head).

Apple haven't invented anything, ever.
They are very good at re-packaging stuff and making it luddite friendly, but groundbreaking...
Not wanting to start a flame fest, but anything there's nothing apple do that you couldn't do on a PC 6 months earlier.

like indexed searching, only apple call it 'spotlight' and claim it's the next best thing.
First true all in one - iMac
How come the Macintosh Classic wasn't a 'true' all in one?

can we move away from the apple is all that/apple isn't all that flame war
it's fucking tedious is what it is, they are products we use, this thread is designed to spread the knowledge of those who use them regularly, not to slag off/praise to the heavens, it just derails the information that people are trying to find.so back to the NAS vs External TBHD issue. Still waiting for a clearcut definitive course I should head down...

Sorry Ed, i was trying to keep the innovations in the modern era.
This is, technically, and AIO:

who cares? if you want to use osx you need a mac or a hackintosh. lifes too short to fuck about with firmware and terminal so a mac it is.
i don't care what your reasoned argument is about cost etc. pc's look shit, they don't run the software i use, don't run osx. end of.
need a roomful of pc's for geeks to do spreadsheets? sure get pc's it's cost effective and one spotty geek you pay peanuts can look after them. -

has anyone else had the fun of running matlab on a mac?
try to manipulate a gigabyte array and watch the machine struggle and cry. going to make a fortran program to do it instead, what a load of shit.
apparently it can be 100 times slower than the same machine running linux. i guess most people never use macs for this sort of computing so mathworks never bothered to get it to work.
You can always partition and install Linux on the second partition for matlab stuff. Boot Camp should work (but call it Windows).
It it really is a 100times slower, you could try running a flavour of linux in a VM.
How is matlab performance in Windows? the last time I ran matlab was version 5.
an airport extreme and a 2 disk jbod enclosure would be a good cupboard under the stairs solution
or one of these for under the desk
