They're right, splined is better.
Having said that, I've been using a bolted-up chainring for a while now on three piece cranks on my fixed-gear polobike without any problems and I beat the crap out of that twice a week on the court. If i had to change anything on it and didn't have the money for a splined setup(which I don't), I'd replace the standard allen-key bolt which secures the chainring with a custom-made one with a low profile hex bolt head for boning up nice and tight with a spanner and a short section of unthreaded, plain shank where the bolt passes through the hole in the chainring for absolute security. Oh, and use loctite.
I am a bike mechanic and it's on my polo bike, not my daily ride, so I don't mind it being a bit higher maintenance (you do need to check on it from time to time) than a fully splined rig.
Just my experience, others may differ. You pays yer money and makes yer choice....

hmmm...
I'll have a think and a bit more of an ask around -

viking is dead on. i run spline drive, but you can get away with non splined as long as you keep the bolt tightened in, and you buy decent cranks/chainring.

splined is the way to go on a fixed bike. tree and profile both make them now and i have been using one for ages and never had an issue at all!

I think I'll go with the spline drive in that case.

you can get a deity splined for like 30£ from wiggle i think. its not great, but it does the job!

I'm thinking tree spline and gusset fix t cranks.

Use threadlock compound on all the bolts, and tighten the bolt that holds your sprocket on after you've torqued up the axle bolts. Profiles are equally as great as they are shit. If you assemble them without threadlock /coppaslip(are they sold with these now?) they tend to come loose and creak a lot. This is probably where a lot of complaints arise.
I'm getting parts together for a trick build.
Issue is regarding bolt on cranks and BMX sprocket for a fixed build and if it's safe.
I know everyone says splined is the way to go but I don't know whether it's really worth forking out for profile or tree spline drive.
Any advice or past experience would be real helpful.
Cheers
