Gazelle? Does anyone know anything about them?

  • This is one of the factory resprays nated by Guru Dutch Cheese.

The serial number on the BB tube says it's 1983/4, but the colour and decals say 1990. The forks are non panto, as in the 1984 catalogue.

Some original Campag components; front derailleur, brake levers and pedals, were replaced with Shimano 600. They are gone now. The original Mavic Monthlery tubulars have stayed, despite getting a puncture on the first outing . The shifters are Gazelle pantos.I'll post better pics when I can.

It rides beautifully, wants to stay in a straight line until told otherwise.

  • Is this a Gazelle?

I own a converted road frame so I can't really compare it to a track frame but it's got the wrap over seatstays and it's apparently 531 so I thought it might be a Champion Mondial?

  • Doesn't look like a Gazelle (BB shell), huge chain stay dents, reinforcement plates at "brake" bridge, which is very rare on a Gazelle (not imposible though). Wrap over seat stays are a bit different too.
As the seller says, I may be a RECO / Regter.
The name Jeannette on the top tube may confirm that, since the daughter of frame builder Regter is called Jeannette and used to be a ( track) racer.
I know here and the father (frame builder), so I can check.
As a matter of fact, he built just a few frames, so, for sure, they will both know this frame.

Reco / Regter was based very closely to Gazelle (Dieren) and Regter was a welder, not a real frame builder. So, I can imagine that he stole some design details from Gazelle.

I also own a Reco track frame (powder coated over a year ago). You can find some details about it and the "brand" here (and some other blogs there):

  • Haha I didn't expect to get a story about the builder's daughter. This is exactly the kind of great useless info from knowledgable experts that makes being on a forum fun ;) Cheers!

  • The one on the picture (Marktplaats) is the 1st version, with a smooth transition from braze-on block to tube. That's a weak spot. A crack (?) will appear on the transition in many cases. Sometimes, one half of the black may fall off completely.

Just to illustrate what Dutch Cheese stated some time ago, here's a picture of my AA Special frames seat clamp:

I saw the same sort of crack on an AA frame a friend of me bought recently. I didn't notice that crack for a long time, but recently the frame started to produce some strange sounds when riding - and i already sorted out all other possible sources like bottom bracket, cranks...

Now i'm courious for how long the clamp will hold...

  • tvm team lo pro on ebay currently

  • can anyone shed some light on this frame? I received some questions on details but really I can't tell whether it's a A, AA or AB frame. It's from 1976 according to frame number

    thanks!

  • Hmm, i think it's an early A frame, (i thought the AA's from that period also had al little butterfly "mannetje".)

The only thing i know for sure is that that's your livingroom!

  • The only thing i know for sure is that that's your livingroom!

    Lock your door Peter.

  • At that time, there was no AB yet.
Looks like an A frame & fork w/o eyelets.
    Fork crown is like A
It has a plate BB shell (Bocama), so it's A
If it had a cast (Roto) bracket it would have been AA.
A has long dropouts, AA short dropouts (at least the later ones, depends on the age and the year Campagnolo started making short dropouts).
AA would have had a butterfly chain stay bridge (X shape, nut round like this).

I think the top tube cable guides are a bit odd. Can't remember that I saw these before. Maybe I'll see some more on Sunday.

  • thanks shame & dc!

pity I've already packed it for a buyer that didn't pay. so I think I'll bring this a bit younger red one sunday.

indeed without the cable guides on top tube... they keep surprising me too these champion mondials!

@ sorethroat - no need, my door (& fridge) is always open for friends :-)

  • Recently finished my new Champion Mondial track frame. Runs super smooth, I love it!

  • Lovely

  • just finished my dark brown 70' gazelle

  • Hi Everybody, this time it is not a Gazelle Champion Mondial, but a dutch Presto "Model Campagnolo". The GranSport group set lets me guess it is a late 70ies/early 80ies bike. I found some Presto pictures on wooljersey.com, but i really hope, the dutch experts can tell me something i don't already know. Did they only use reynolds tubings for their frames and did they even build the frames themselves? Anyway, here is a pic of my new beloved bike:

    HUGE but lovely :)

  • @ Reisberg

Presto has quite a reputation in NL
However, the brand / company changed personel and owners several times.
At the moment it's only a bike shop and, as many other LBS do, they sell/sold bikes with their own label.
In the past they had their own frame builders and their own hand made frames, but at the moment it's just stickers (if they still do).
Some famous Amsterdam frame builders worked there, like Jan LEgrand, Peter Serier, Stroober and son, Bertus Slesker.

  • You can still visit their shop at the Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam. But as DC says, now it's just a LBS with a nice history

  • To be honest, I hate the TVM colour schemes (the multi colour, as well as the green version), but also the Jubilee and he red/white/bue frames are ugly IMHO.
So good that not all people have the same taste.

  • Hi all,

I've seen this Gazelle Ventoux frame in the classifieds

    • it's the right size for me but the seller doesn't know what tubing it is. Anyone on here know?
  • It's low end plumbers steel. Same as your central heating and my 1st schoolbike.
They gave it some racing style dropouts, drop bars andcalled it a racing bike.
It does the job, but don't expect anything from it. No real value. I would say a tenner or so for frame and fork.
If you like nice Gazelles, start looking for Tour de l'Avenir, Trophy series, Formula series and Champion Mondial.

  • I believe that is one of their earlier aluminium frames.. I've seen it somewhere in catalogs, I'll have a look..

  • Gazelle Alu Pro Race.. Found in 1997 catalog on here.. Very nice site..

  • what can you tell us about this frame?

    http://www.tweedehands.nl/fietsen/fietsen/racefiets/gazelle-tvm-20865360.html

I can tell you it's not worth €499
