Go to a bearing shop and by high grade (100 or lower number grade) balls, don't go to Halfords next time (they are 1000 grade. about as low as you can get) or a bike shop, unless they have graded bearings.
Those ones you see in packs on cards are rubbish. You will trash your spindle and cups if you use them for any length of time. -

were talking microns just remeber to grease and service and youll be fine just use the bearings you have and ride.

I use a lot of these and Campag BB's with loose balls on our track bikes. The better the quality of the cups and axle the more sensitive they are to the quality of the balls.
Skimping on the balls and not greasing the bracket properly and riding in the rain will trash a sugino BB in no time !
Grade 10 ( best ) AISI 52100 chrome steel balls are cheap ( £4 for 20 ) from the specialist bearing suppliers and really do make a difference.
A new Sugino BB set is over £65 why risk trashing it for £ 4 worth of balls a a blob of good grease......
PM me is you can't get the balls and I will send you some.
regards Allister

Cheers for the help fellas. I invested in a bottle of grade 25's which apparently is supposed to be a step up from the ones the 75 came with (I'm told they're 100). As for riding in the wet I think I've learn't from my mistake. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the grease this time around!

So do you run your cup&cone bb's sans race? Just got one thanks to allister(fitted with races)
I had an old chorus headset where I had to remove the race as I couldn't fit it all in there and I thought it would abuse the bearings?
Sorry for jacking your thread, tut tut for abusing the 75 though..

I always do. I think they are more properly called 'cages'. Best not to have them.
Its usually 11 balls (¼") each side I think. Also it is not possible to use too much grease and a good idea to smear it all over the centre of the axle and inside the bottom bracket and its threads. -

May try removing them, see if I can feel the difference..
Ta Sausagefingers..
Hi,
So I tried a quick search for an answer to this with no luck. So my BB started making some nasty noises and wasn't riding as smooth so took it apart to see what was going on. It seemed to have run out of grease and the bearings had rusted and come free from the cage on one side. Luckily there was no signs of wear on the spindle or any of the threads though so I'm only looking at replacing the bearings.
Anyway I made the mistake of going to Halfords for some replacements, and whilst they're fine and it all seems to run smooth I don't have hopes that they'll last or ride as well as it could.
Anyone know where I can pick up some replacements online or it is just a case of going to a semi decent bike shop for some nicer ones?
