Sam Humpheson (ex Sigma Sport) is the best wheelbuilder I know. Lives in Herne Hill.
Don't think he's on here, but I have his details if anyone wants to chat to the dude.

I'd second that recommendation of Sam's wheelbuilding skills. He built my bling carbon road wheels and did a superb job.

Ed at Evans in Kingston does all my wheels. Top notch. Leart his skills from hillybilly i believe

I still highly recommend broken_777 on this forum. Cheap and the best wheels.

This might be useful to know, being as he's local (to me)
Could you send us a PM when you can?

Allrite I thought I'd dig up this old thang and see what you peeps have to say on this matter in the light of 2011.
Also I need some wheels building so...
London Fields charge £35 each wheel. ( dirty Dave and Greg both have left the building)
BLB quoted me £15 (!?!?!?!?)
Kiwicycles... Too busy.
Tokyo Fixed £? But have the parts me wants.
I know about Harry Rowland and Arup but I'd like to avoid posting wheels. What have the ol timers and others got to say?

stef - do it yourself. What are the specs you want built?
-
• #61
Black 32h goldtechs and either d+son or dodici rims. Radial front 3x rear. All black.
Andy showed me how to build a 3x but that was about 5 years ago... -

Arup's in Sydenham, which isn't that far from central London.
-
• #63
Sam at Look Mum no Hands has built me some really good wheels; from memory he charges £35 a wheel.
-
• #64
Ok but i think £35 for a wheel is not that great
-
• #65
Broken_777 does a good job too. Did me a damn good price. BLB sounds cheap, too. Use them.

bicycle magic on greatorex st in whitechapel do builds for £25 and they've got to be my favourite bike shop at the mo and have been for a while. can't recommend them enough
-
• #67
I will do it for free if you want egg shaped wheels.
-
• #68
Right right, Tokyo fixed quoted me £25 per wheel. And since they have been providing me te most solid advice so far I feel as if I owe them my custom. Those fellas seem trustworthy. I don't know of any other shop that would feel comfortable to have their workshop inside the actual shop.
-
• #69
as for having a workshop inside the shop....its not about being comfortable but about having no space/staff.....
-
• #70
Say whatever you wanna say but in there you can see exactly what's going on, unlike many other places. See London fields, which I respect greatly has a clear plastic partition so that you can see right through to the workshop, and o think they seem to have enough space. On the other side u have no idea about what goes on downstairs at BLB.

It's storage down there...

That's what I thought, they've only got two stands I thought... hence why they don't really do many bookings. I;ve seen ppl building wheels either at the back by the stands, or outdoors.
Why not go for arup?
If you're paying around £50+ then I'd go for named individuals who are well known. Arup, wheelsmith, etc.

I still need you to build me some wheels, Martin... N16 is a cunt to get to from Brixton tho'... :S

I would not hesitate in getting Arup to build me another set of wheels. Awesome service and work.

Joe, I was asking Wally about building me a set the other day... He said 'as long as they're low flange, cos I've only got the longer lengths of spokes in...' Heh, what a nice guy.
+1 to Hillbilly - he gave me a wheelbuilding tutorial and the resulting wheels roll beautifully and have required no attention whatsoever since. Also, he has a smashing beard.
