When I started putting together my own bikes in the 70's, I didn't have access to (or even heard of) a torque wrenches. Didn't seem to cause any more or fewer problems than now.
I also used to pump up my tyres without a pressure guage.
I guess things move on but don't get too worked up if you can't afford/don't want to buy a torque wrench.
