I asked Vodafone if their texts were really unlimited, but according to fair usage or whatever it's not. Its something like 3,000 texts a month or so.

That's over 107 texts every day of the week for a whole month.

I know, but what I was trying to say is there is no such thing as unlimited imo

Not what it says on their pricing page: http://giffgaff.com/index/pricing
Oh well thats alright then :)

When are the advertising standards going to get onto that I wonder?
-

to be honest if i used 3000 texts in a month i'd be impressed

they always have a fair usage policy in the fine print.. to be fair, it would be pretty difficult to reach the fair use policy on texts, maybe on data if u are nailing torrents or newsgroups...
Any of you guys ahve any info on the new dual core chuips... im copnfused by which is actually the best..
orion/tegra 2/omap
i thought that orion was the most advanced but some benchmarks aparently put the omap ahead??

The ASA have been through this a bunch of times with the unlimited internet packages. As long as it's defined in the T&C, they can call it whatever they like. Take nothing for granted with phone companies.

orion/tegra 2/omap
i thought that orion was the most advanced but some benchmarks aparently put the omap ahead??I don't care about fine print, fair usage policies, etc. I've been using "unlimited" accounts since adsl was first introduced into Oz and we were a trial company. It was properly unlimited then (if it worked).
I just take issue with this continual use of the word "unlimited" when it's clearly not unlimited. Ban its use and force ISPs, providers etc to state 500mb per month max download or 1gb/month before shaping or whatever they ACTUALLY do.

So if I offered 24hr, around the clock support or something and then just left an answering machine on, would I not be hauled up for not actually providing what I claimed?

As long as you also indicate that's what you'd be doing, then it's OK by the ASA.
This is currently being reviewed, with a consultation finishing next week: http://www.asa.org.uk/Media-Centre/2011/CAP-and-BCAP-consultations-on-Up-to-and-Unlimited-Claims.aspx

I heard a vicious rumour that the tegra 2 wasn't really fast enough for 1080p/30fps video whereas the omap was.
This was from FOSDEM a couple of weeks back

rhowe that link doesn't go to any particular article.
Also, it seems that LG has shown that the OMAP is the king of the hill in the processor war.

Hummingbird vs Snapdragon vs OMAP vs Tegra 2 explained.not bad but the article is irrelevant in the sense thats comparing accross two generations.. the hummingbird is samsungs last processor and over a year old, tegra two has just been released and now samsung have released orion which you would expect to be much more powerful as the hummingbird was by far the strongest last year...
Also i have heard that the benchmark scores for the handsets above are not worth going off due to the lg 3d having no restriction on fps and 3d rendering whereas the samsung does so not a level playing field ie the orion chip is capped at X fps and 3d rendering also so will not be able to outperfrom the lg in tests but without the cap it would...
all really interesting stuff and its amazing how the mobile technology world is developing so quickly... Bonkers to think that a phone is more powerful than some laptops!!

It means nothing if the cpu uses so much power the batt is dead in 5min.
As a non-gamer I'm all about battery efficiency now, not raw cpu power.
More efficient screens and processors. Higher capacity batteries. -
• #4143
More efficient software helps too.
-
• #4144
+1 and +1 above that too.
So happy with my HTC Desire, if the battery life could be blackberry standards I wouldn't need another phone for years.

• #4145
Would be better if it was kindle standards

You know, I almost put in a "and I don't want any ooh look at me efficient os Symbian bollocks, Andy" line in there but I thought "no no, no need to bait him".
Enjoy your new blue screen of death phones. :P

asking a favour here....
Thinking of getting a new, factory unlocked galaxy S. The primary use will be Skype, I'm aware that Skype doesn't work with Android 2.1 on the Galaxy S, but Skype syas it does if you have uodated to 2.2..
Is the update to 2.2 available for the factory unlocked galaxys s (through Kies)? does anyone have experience of this?
any other suggestions or unlocked galaxy S with 2.2 and working skype for sale?

The official Samsung Froyo 2.2 update on the Galaxy S has been extremely sketchy. Its been released then pulled. Seems that a mixture of politics (profit) and a possible flawed update are just 2 of the reasons for the problems. Samsung seem to have not really wanted to update their Galaxy S (or the Fascinate - the American version), as it then made their newer model phone seem unimpressive, and folks may well have felt the original Galaxy S (with Froyo) would be good enough, and then not upgrade phone models. Either way, the Froyo update is still being rolled out very slowly, and apparently begrudgingly.
The HTC Desire on Froyo seems a good option, even though the Galaxy S have better video playback capabilities. But for Skype, it seems ideal......and a bit of a bargain now, as more and more later phones are released. The HTC Desire HD rendered the regular Desire to the "good, but not as powerful" domain.
As for factory unlocked - any phone from Expansys, Clove and I think Carphonewarehouse also, comes unlocked from any network.
EDIT:
The official Skype page says that it is aware of problems with Samsung Galaxy S. Therefore it seems that the choice is being made for you, no?http://blogs.skype.com/en/2010/10/android.html
*Skyp*e is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
*Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can’t guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We’re aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we’re looking to address these in the future.*
It’s free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions. -

Now, back to gaming.
One of my favourite games on the defunct Sega Dreamcast, was ChuChu Rocket. It was a simple game, that came free with the early Dreamcasts. The game involved guiding random mice into rockets, and avoiding cats that appeared in their paths. It all takes place on a boardgame like scene (chessboard for example). Well its now available for Android phones, but is now called ShokoRocket. Its free.
More powerful Android phones, such as the HTC Desire HD, and the coming dualcore phones, will eventually be able to play World Of Warcraft....brought to Android by Gamestring.

The Motorola Xoom, the most advanced Android tablet is to be offered in the States, without Flash. WTF? Have they completely taken leave of their senses? This is mad. But better news hopefully for Europe, as we should get it with Flash installed.
Look out for Golf battle 3D. Its not free (but not expensive), but it looks like fun.
