Good lock does cost money, and it's worth the peace of mind at time.
just get a Kryponite Evolution Series 4 lock and mount it on the bike instead.
The Evo Mini is fine with certain lamp post and sign, I used it myself too, as for the wheel, just get a front one with quick release and replace the skewer with the security one.
