Rim height aesthetics

  • This is not about the hipster <-> non-hipster subject, it's about plain product aesthetics:

Talkin' of H+Son, Dodici, B43 etc., sometimes I see bikes where I really like very deep rims and their looks... aggressive, appealing etc.
Other times I see bikes with deep Vs where I think that this looks just... heavy, wrong.

Both groups of bikes have in common that they are proper steel track frames with modest colour schemes, so I really can't tell what it might be that makes me like those rims with one and not with the other.

Maybe this controversial perception is depending on the frame size?

  • Could it be the smaller details of the rest of the bike that you don't necesarily take note of, but still affect you oppinion? Or maybe the rider themselves and what they look like?

I sometimes think they look good, but generally prefer things that match the age of the frame. Maybe the age could factor into it as well, seeing as there are a lot of new steel track frames around.

  • I'm a big fan of low profile rims. My wheels are currently on my work in progress track project. Eventually this bike will have 50mm rims but that's for aerodynamics and not so much for aesthetics.

  • Depends on the the bike. The general rule would be deep section for fat tubed bike, low profile for skinny tubed bike.

That Cervelo is the exception that proves the rule, as is this...

    Indeed rims far too deep..

Even though I like both of these, if they were mine, I'd swap the wheels.

  • same, the deep ones on the cervelo, the small ones on the Naga.

Jetski, I understand where you're coming from.
    EG:
this looks really nice, as does this

but they usually look shit together.

  • ^ Got to say I massively disagree on the green one. Highlighted ornate lugs + deep-v's doesn't work.

This hit's the nail on the head.

The rims work on the raw one, because it's TIG'd and has a modern styled stem. That is also why that multi-coloured jap bike looks gash imo.

what does this 'together' refer to? rims + frame or bike + bike?

  • together meaning deep rims + normal sized steal frames.

  • I have to admit that I like the green ^ above, maybe it's not ideal with those highlighted lugs, but generally it's appealing.

while here is an example I do not like as it feels sooo heavy in a way:

  • while this one's ACE: (ok, these are F30/deep V = just 30mm)

  • I guess the hub choice makes a big difference.
Someone posted a pic of a low flange DA hub and a deep section rim and it looked very good.
Sometimes a LF hubs on deep rims looks odd..
Each to his own I guess (to a degree.!!)

  • No one is mentioning the colour of the rim aspect. Silver deeper rims tend to look more in place even on older bikes, probably as it's more traditional... a fully black (or other block colour) rim, no braking surface always looks pretty modern so you get the juxtaposition of new/old. Which may look good sometimes, but like everything a bit more 'out there', is at least more likely to divide opinion...

  • another lugged frame that looks good with deep wheels

  • deep section wheels - nice to have, weigh a shit-ton. unless you can afford crabon. as per sumos post.

  • I rulez

Are those rims as wide as they are deep? How is the bike standing up?

  • lol @ those cranks, EEI.

  • Those are for speed.

  • ET X

    what does it mean?
