Got a pair of all black DVS rico's (for £30), same soles as the ones above. Had them about 5 months deffo rate them, the soles not your classic waffle but it's nearly as good, no wear issues. The quality/fit of new vans is hit and miss. I've had 2 pairs of chukka's that lasted about a year a piece and then I had a pair that lasted 2 weeks. I've heard similar stories about halfcabs, the heel just collapses and falls appart. I've got a pair of chukka low's that feel absolutely horrible, the shape is nothing like a normal chukka too. I do have a pair of authentics that are right in that worn in sweet spot though, you know nothing serious just a few little holes, a bit bleached out and plenty of tread. BTW did you know that vans, eastpack, lee and jansport are all owned by the same company.
