Deep section 28h rims

  • So I've found Mavic CXP 33's for a little under £35 each but was after something a little deeper

Halo Mercury's in white coming in at £35 again, was ideally after some in plain alloy

This is where I've got after searching the internet for what feels like an eternity looking through eBay until my eyes start bleeding and called brick lane bikes who seem to distribute alot but are pretty unhelpful and pricey. There's a really good thread on here coving a range of deep rims but Im struggling to find a on or off line retailer.

Anyone know where I can get a couple of 30mm or slightly deeper 28 hole alloy coloured machined rims for around the £35 or cheaper mark? Need to be 28 hole as I have some rather nice hope titanium hubs I was hoping to build up.

    Thanking you!

  • If want hipster rims, you coulod go for som....
    Velocity deep V's from BLB.
    Dodici from TFG.
    H+Son from TFG.

I'd go for some kinlin XR-300 or XR-380 though, as they have a far more exceptable weight.

Pretty sure you can get thm in the UK.

  • Thanks a lot man, looking like Im going to have to spend a little more than I hoped. But I guess you pretty much get what you pay for.

Saying that, just found some XR-300 for £40 each from here

Cheers for the advise, its much appreciated.

  • Ohh, nice find. Bloody nice selection of ambrosio rims too.

    Book marked.

The Kinlin rims reach their low weight partly by being narrow and having a thinner brake track. So they are better suited to 25mm or smaller tyres, and wear a tad quicker than some others.

  • just seen this... want.

do they get the smallfurry seal of approval?

  • If you mean the XR-300 or the newer XR-380 then just have a look around Roadbikereview. They are the goto rims for lightweight semi-aero alu wheels. Bearing in mind....

A 30mm rear rim, laced 28 2x, with a 27mm front laced 24 radial. Would make a nicely balanced wheelset, for the average weighted rider.

If I was using them in londons-stop/start-london. I'd go for lightweight low profile rims, that I could spin up quickly though.

  • I am running the IRD Cadence Aero's on my CX bike. Lovely rims :)

  • Good stuff! I wanted a 30mm or so deep rim for strength and aesthetics, do like the look of a deeper rim but not too deep! Going to take on the build myself as well so wanted something that is strong to start with as Im not expecting it to be as good as a pro build doing it for the first time! Living in Oxford at the moment commuting and riding at the weekends which involves hills another reason for a stiffer rim I’m lead to believe.

I’m only about 75kg so hoping spoke snappage is going to be kept to a minimum. What low profile rims do you recommend? Mavic open pros seem to be highly recommended, maybe the cxp33's are areo enough for me thinking about it.

  • Still on the deep section theme...try DT Swiss RR585...around £50, got some on order myself.

  • I have some cxp 33's myself. Very solid rims, which have a nice look to them too.

Whereas deep section rims will be stiffer during the build and will therefore most likely need less truing. A lot of low profile rims like Open pro's have eyelets. This makes it easier for the nipple to twist in the drilling, reducing spoke wind-up. It also allows for a bit more tension, and therfore a stiffer wheel for the depth.

Open pro's and excellights are the rims of chioce for pave riding for a reason. The slight give a low profile rim has, makes it more resiliant. Plus adds to the comfort.

  • So I've found Mavic CXP 33's for a little under £35 each

    From where?

  • anyone spotted an open pro built set?

/should prolly merge this with the other wheel thread - or vice versa

  • i'm reckoning thats a winner fur... priced just right too.

  • i'm reckoning thats a winner fur... priced just right too.

No frills sealed cartridge hubs, laced with double butted ACI spokes to Mavic open pros.

Spot on, for a daily duty, fixed wheelset I'd say.

  • basically entry level ambrosio hubs by all accounts. i can live with that, unitl that goldtec shipment jackknives outside my flat.

  • I have basic ambrosio's laced to CXP 33's. Should have gotten Open pro's, but the pointy profile of the CXP looks cool (at least I'm honest).

I had some issue's with the bearing pre-load on the front hub (mainly because I did'nt know what I was doing). Which made my front end wobbly. Sorted it out, and they've been silky smooth through year's of mis treatment and neglect since.

  • ah you gets what you pays for. reckon imma do it. cheers again - on both threads

  • Let me refresh this thread as I don't see a point in doing another one. I am searching desperately for a set of tubular rims 24h&28h (preferably) or 28h&28h in 700c. This is gonna be for my second bike, so this will have moderate use on track and road occasionally. It would be great if the rims are being sold in EU, so that I don't need to pay custom taxes. I don't really like carbon, would rather prefer some good old tubulars like mavic gp4 or araya adx-1. Could you advise me on which rims to get for reasonable price? I am searching for 3 days on ebay and shops with little result.
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • Sorry I missed this thread in the first place. This link may help with choices of Deep V Profile Rims.
There isn't a list on tub rims though, but that may appear one day. The Wheelsets List may give some pointers.

  • First, the track forum guys will probably give you much better info.

Next, if you get *really *stuck and want some classic rims, there is this site: http://www.yellowjersey.org/cherchi.html

As for ebay, my gut feeling is that you'll be able to pick up a set for next to nothing, if you wait. Generally, no one wants tubs. Or just buy these because they are the sex.

  • Velocity do a tubular version of the Deep V called Major Tom. BLB should have them.

  • thanks, I ll look into that
