Doesn't quite work like this in practice. There are no flutes/grooves/rifles in the seat end of the seatpost (think about it), nor in the BB shell. AFAIK on SLX they are in the bottom bracket end of the seat tube and chainstays and on both ends of the down tube. Not easy to get a finger in these places to check.
I didnt say seat post I said where the seat tube meets the bracket shell, its quite easy to check without the bottom bracket installed.

£50 for a chain? Jebus...
If it really is an Izumi V Super Toughness, that's a fair price. Whether a shop should be recommending such an expensive track chain for a road conversion is moot - for people who actually ride their bike rather than just posing with it, the £10 Wippermann 1Z1 is a much better buy. Again, an example of the shop setting out to take as much money as possible rather than supplying the most appropriate bike for the customer's needs.

Fair point, and one of the most reasoned responses I've read in a while. So many comments have been opinions, and not facts. Some folk like to keep their bikes pure and restored faithfully and accurately to original spec, some don't. No bad thing.
I'm appreciative of the constructive comments received, and only wanted to know more about the history of the frame and forks. Naturally, the closer you look, the more you see. I'm 50/50 about the quality of finish with regards to the paint.
BLB have been good with me, overpriced or not. I blew the dough (with the help of Cyclescheme voucher), and have a bike I love tearing around London on everyday.
Time to move on to other things...
