Equipment Recommendations?? Brakes and Large Frames

Posted on
  • Two things I'm interested in at the moment:

    1. I need some decent brakes -- no... really good brakes, actually -- to replace the stock brakes on my 2005 Langster. 12 miles + round trip through central London every day means Lots of use, despite riding fixed.

I'm 100kg +, as well, so need something serious -- any recommendations?

    1. The Langster needs replacement -- it's too small at 62cm and I'm thinking I'll have to have something built -- any ideas for good builders in London/SE England? Elsewhere?

Any ideas on either are much appreciated... thanks.

  • UTFS Bro'.

As for brakes if you want something serious just go for any of the top of the range brakes from any of the big names, I'd take Dura-Ace personally.

  • upgraded brake pads will make a lot of difference too.

This. Cheaper than new brakes too. New cables will help too if they're getting worn out.

  • Yeah. Shimano 105 with Green SwissStop pads is a classic combination. Go for Ultegra or Dura Ace if you feel you want to spend some more money.

  • for stopping power any shimano slr dual pivot brake caliper will be suficient. just upgrade the pads possibly, and get some good inner cable that doesnt stretch

    what height are you anyway?

  • SRAm make nice road brakes. I'd check the set-up first though. Make sure pinch bolts are tight enough and that all the outer ends have been filed flat. Also check the positioning of the pads relative to the rim, with a bit of toe-in (forward edge of pads slightly closer to the rim).
