People flashing, waving to direct etc is a double edged sword I think, obviously it's not allowed and can cause dangerous situations if people aren't vigilant before signalling, moving. Sometimes, however, it can help with letting people know their intentions, letting people go if they're trying to turn in or out of a junction where they could be waiting for ages.
That said, someone waved me in last year, started to turn right and had to stomp on the brakes so I didn't run over pinkgottimobs with my truck, who happened to be filtering along the traffic on the inside at the time. On second thoughts, couldn't have been a bad thing ;)
I think odd situations like these are simply a reality of riding in london, be aware and prepared. Driving in town is nothing like anywhere else in the country and riding appears to be the same.
