Wanted: Ratio advice??

Posted on
  • currently running with 42-15 and its almost impossible to do skid stops on (well for me anyway) but i quite like it on the flats just its not brilliant for stops.
so wanted to stick another cog on the other side of the rear hub just wanted some advice on what i should put on it for flat riding and skid stops in the main
    cheers, james

  • serious answer, james, if you have an iphone go and get the bike gears app, then you won't be subjected to the derailing which is sure to come, or use this one online http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/
42:15 is 73.7 GI, if you want comfortable city riding and the ability to skid, with all being equal you know to get your arse out of the saddle, hump the stem, and pull up with your leading leg, then you should ideally be looking for a ratio of anything between 55-68GI depending on how spinny you want to be, so put on a 17t and it gets you right into 65GI.

Also next time check where your thread is posted up, I doubt anyone is looking in classifieds and shopping to see a request for gear ratio advice.

  • Try a 16 or a 17 sprocket.

You have a front brake? If not get one.

As for pedals, it's almost impossible to skidstop without straps/clipless. It can be done but only if you get your weight right over the front wheel. Not practial while riding

  • I would recommend you type ratio into the search box before the pack descends....

  • OK, what have I missed?

  • Srsly tho'... You've got all the right advice up there... ^

cheers for that man i'll stick a 17 on and see how i get on

i know how to skid and i have clips. i had a 42 19 ratio which was too spinny and when i got a new back wheel i didn't know much about ratio so stuck a 15 on it to replace the 19
(and i'm still getting used to this site so yeah pardon where i've posted this etc haha)

  • i have 42-14 on my wangster and it can do all sorts of skidding magic.
question, have you ever tried hopping on the pedals, pulling the rear wheel off the ground and then slowing the wheel down in the same move? thats easy and slows you down more than skid depending on how much welly you want to give your straps. i call it the hop skip skid aand the best thing is its only one step away from a lame bunny hop

    peas

  • skidding is al about practice. Just keep at it

  • mmm i'll give that ago on my cycle tomorrow cheers
and yeah i know but i'm finding 42-15 pretty hard, might do a skid practice sesh tomorrow

  • I ran 42-13 in Brighton, decent enough to get up hills, and nice and easy skidddzzz. Also gives you 13 skid patches, you might wanna consider that when leaving all your rubber on the road...

  • 42:17 will be mega-spinny-skiddy... Super fun, 17 skid patches... Do it...

  • you call that a flaming? where's the bloodbath?
