• I've been approached about a job in Saudi, in Jeddah the most cosmopolitan and 'ahem' tolerant of Saudi cities. Although obviously still strictly Muslim. I'd be interested to know if anyone has ever worked or lived there or has had a friend or relative who has and what you/they thought of it? Thanks :)

  • From limited time there I can tell you that Jeddah boasts a 100' tall sculpture of a bicycle - might be compensating for the fact that it appears to be the only one there. Loads of high rollers in bejewelled Lambos and bored yoot on quad bikes, but not the most pedestrian oriented of cities (partly climate, partly environment).

Paradoxically, it also reminded me a lot of America (IIRC it hosts the largest McDonalds in the world)

  • My parents lived in Riyadh for 14 years, till about 2002 i think. I was there as a kid for four years 90-94ish.

They liked it. Tax free. While it is pretty weird and takes some getting used to, i think they had a pretty decent life. Lived on a compound called Arizona Golf Resort, which had a couple of hundred houses of westerners on it, a golf course, swimming pools, camels:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Riyadh+Saudi+Arabia&aq=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=14.56721,28.256836&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Riyadh,+Riyadh+Province+Saudi+Arabia&ll=24.811405,46.726527&spn=0.002727,0.005493&t=h&z=18

Socialising is a lot more 'make your own fun', so everyone becomes an expert at brewing their own beer, wine and everything else on the sly. Visiting each others houses or getting pissed in the desert with the Hash House Harriers.

Not sure how much cycling you could get done though... Probably get in trouble wearing shorts out on the roads.

  • A is for Arsehole all covered in shit, hey ho said Rolly!

    That's hashing innit?
