Was great fun last year even getting lost then found then blagging the stewards to let us get to the finishing line... they didn't
We must have been in the same group!
I'd actually be in favour of an earlier start... say 6:15 or 6:30. Lats year a lot of people were stopped from getting to the Mall.
Unless a good pace can be really guaranteed (it can't) then an earlier start is probably a better thing to do.
Late to the game on this discussion, sorry.
IRC, there were 2 groups that didn't finish on time but this was due to an epic fail on sticking to the route. I think we lost about half hour in going the wrong way and doing the same points twice and the Isle of Dogs backwards.EDIT, and JD's HIYA on the BBC was the highlight.

Whilst the fast group was great for bombing round the closing roads, I waited for my better half and joined the second group of about 15 and we were stopped just at the time the photograph of the first group was taken, at the bottom of the mall which I'm guessing was 5ish minutes after. In an ideal world it would be great to have a fucking huge group make it all the way to the finish, but slowing down to a level where everyone could finish would be both unrealistic and unfair on a lot of people. If the pace was kept reasonable for the majority of the route and then picked up for the final sprint more people would cross the line as the authorities would be unable to deal with the mass of people moving at speed. Just a thought. However, as I finished a good 30 mins before my other half, I wouldn't wait for her this time in the hope I'd make it across the line.

Pace isn't the real problem, it's people getting lost.

Lost? Really? Just follow the blue line no?

Wasn't that easy and it makes a difference when the crowds aren't lining the route. There were quite a few fails last year.
Tip: Don't asks plod for directions.Don't follow velo libre.

To be fair, due to the size of the group starting out, if you found yourself setting off near the back you were fucked pretty quickly by the traffic still on the roads. As there was no critical mass style blocking going on, some of us simply had to stop at several junctions and there was no way most people were jumping the gap. I got to the arse end of the front group and was bollocksed from the effort so was glad of the rest when I doubled back at Tower bridge to wait for my gf.
Still the best ride I did last year.

Were you in Josh's group? I joined that one at Tower bridge when I couldn't be arsed waiting any more.

Yeah, I was one of the first to arrive at the roundabout, so was one of the last to leave. Got lost within the first 10 miles, ended up following someone who was just going home. Managed to find someone who knew where they were going but got stopped by police a couple times trying to cut back onto the route.

Yeah I heard there were some detours last year..
-
• #166
When we got to Westferry for the second time there were bikes going in every direction. And I know I led a group half way up the Commercial Road before having to do a few cut throughs to get back on course.
I thought the lack of organisation/cohesiveness was one of the best things about the ride, it really felt like London was one big playground for cyclists.

just out of interest, how many actually did this ride last year? Also, the organisers might be expecting us so will make it impossible for anyone to get over the line.

was thinking the same thing. I reckon we're getting busted this year
-

Who are the organisers, flora? Perhaps they'd arrange for a prize to be given at the finish line to the first rider who finishes with a slice of bread and margarine
-
• #173
@ skydancer, nice idea. keep it under your hat though - ie. don't spread it!

you're right ian, better not butter them up
