yeah they are compatible. I'm using an old style one atm and its fine. the 85W works on both mb and mbp but eh 60w one is a bit slow to charge on the mbp.
ive had the velocity backpack for 5 years and they do get hot but no more then other packs. They are really great for rainy days and can pack lots of stuff inside. you can screw the straps off and wash them properly too.
