Daytime lights

  • Couldn't seem to find a thread discussing this and was interested in the forums opinion on cars using headlights during the day.
In many countries it is compulsory, and since leaving the UK I have got quite used to it. Before I left, I could see no reason why but when I return to the UK it is clear to me that vehicle visibility is significantly better when lights are run at all times.

On my bike I run a flashing front and rear during the day and I have no doubt that it has helped on several occasions.

What do you think, lights on or off during the day?

  • The problem is people then only look for lights.

  • i can't see the point during the day.

  • Er, let's stop discussing this before someone in authority spots it and thinks "Aah, that's a good idea, let's make it compulsory"

Just my opinion, like. Seen this kinda thing before.

  • I use lights for commuting whether it's light or dark, anything that stops even 1 extra car or pedestrian from pulling/walking out in front of me is a good thing!

  • I have never used lights during the day until last tuesday when a van in the opposing lane decided to turn right across my path in Forest Hill.Completely failed to spot me.
Thankfully I braked in time to allow him to pass across my path in front of me.
I am now using my Exposure Strada (front light) in blinking mode.
Was broad daylight and no sun glare.

  • Many years ago I noticed this in Canada, and thought it weird at the time. But, it does make a huge difference to vehicular visibility. Though there is the trade off of a negative effect of futher energy use, just when we're all looking at ways of cutting it.

I've seen a few bikes with lights on during the day, and I don't see the point. IMO it would certainly be useful around dawn and dusk, where it is light, but not bright outside. I'd imagine one would need maybe the equivalent of a HOPE 1 to be seen......lets say at midday.

  • At this time of year when it's so grey I have my lights on during daylight hours quite a bit. I judge it on conditions really. I use a Vision 1 on the front and an Exposure Flare on the back so neither have trouble being seen in daylight.

  • Yeah, +1. At this time of year when light is in short supply even during the day, when it gets quite overcast with thick cloud it seems worthwhile. Most of the other times not. I can usually tell if it's necessary when other cars become less visible during the day because of the light - that's when it's time to turn mine on. Common sense really.

  • ^ this. I've been using lights in most light conditions apart from direct sunlight or bright light. I'd really like a flare, they seem excellent! Overkill, almost.

  • ^yep.

  • I drive a Volvo with aftermarket High Intensity Discharge lights, on all the time.

    Try and miss me!

  • I was out riding today and in the distance saw what I thought was a floodlight, or at least a very bright motorbike headlight. Must have been half a mile away, turned out to be on a cycle - don't know what light it was but made a huge difference to visibility.

  • I used to have a motorbike, as with many motorbikes the headlights are always on.

At least people can see me as I weave through traffic like a total plonker! - Safety first

  • i have a generator hub on one of my bikes and leave the lights switched on most of the time.
guess it makes a difference when you go under a bridge or even in shadowed areas with trees etc.
