I've been using 28:17 (fixed) on 26"x1.5", giving 41.2GI, for about a year and found it great, if a bit spinny. Just rebuilt my polo bike though and have converted to 700c and altered the gearing to 32:17, which is about 51.7GI. I think it's now a little bit on the high side TBH but I'm gonna persevere with it for a while, on the basis that I think you can get used to almost anything. Low to Mid 40's is prob a good starting point for most people, fixed or free, though, IMHO.
