Sugino RD2 to Italian threaded BB

Posted on
  • Hey, I'm trying to install Sugino RD2 cranks onto a italian threaded Bottom Bracket. Unfortunately the original BB was British threaded and now I need a new Bottom Bracket, does anyone know which one would fit?
    Thank you in advance.

  • Do you mean to fit your cranks or the frame?

  • Preferably both, i obviously don't want to replace the cranks or the frame.

  • if the original bb was english threaded, then the italian bb will not go into your frame.
with sugino cranks and your frame you'd want an english threaded bb, not sure which taper (iso or jis)..
    edit: just get this http://www.tokyofixedgear.com/shopexd.asp?id=736

  • Wonderful, thank you very much for the help!

  • That is what i have, the BB has never been in the frame and it is a new frame with Italian threading, but the BB is British threaded.

  • Oh right now I understand your question...
I presume, because italian bottom bracket shells are 2mm wider you'd want a BB with an axle 2mm longer than the one you have at the moment, but how this would affect chainline I'm not sure.

    What taper is the BB?

  • I assume it must be JIS, as the current BB is 130mm and I have to add 2mm for the Bottom Bracket shell and an extra 4.5 for the interchangeability a 140mm BB would probably be best.

  • Oh it's JIS.
That could make it difficult. I don't think shimano make a BB in the kind of length you'd need. Campy do but it's ISO taper which complicates things more and would cost a lot.

Aside from using a longer BB and spacing out the cog at the back to try and correct the chainline I don't think there's that much you could do..

Someone correct me if I'm wrong though!

  • You appear to be right, but I'll measure my chain line first and then work out what BB axle size i need. Thank you for the help!

  • No problem, hope you sort something out.

  • Actually how the blazes would i go about measuring my chainline without a BB installed?

  • it needs a 103mm JIS for 42mm chainline
    Shimano UN54 in 107mm JIS Italian 70mm

with a 1mm spacer for your hubs fixed cog threads it should give you a 43mm chainline which is close enough. the 2.5mm spacer wont leave enough threads to safely secure the lockring

130mm sounds way off unless you are using a converted disc hub with spacers, the extra 2mm shell width doesnt make any difference

  • Are you sure that will fit my cranks? It makes no mention of them being JIS it just says square taper?
    Thanks for the help though

  • I just needed 103 jis italian bb for sugino messenger and bought this:
