  • ^ I like.

  • I've put drops and those brake levers that i bought from you on my iro and the brakes seem miles away! climbing on the hoods seems ok, but braking down hill it seems as though all of my weight is way over the front. still needs some bedding in time i think.

I found that out too (and found out that I need a really short TT length for my height), 57cm TT bike with flat bar felt fine, but the reach were too long when I added drop with brake hood.

now 54cm with brake hood and I'm fine.

  • Got mine pretty much how I want it now, one week after I built it up I'm happy to post pics. Took me a few days to decide on a stem/bars height but finally cut the steerer yesterday. Fitted full length mudguards today but these pics are from yesterday before I put those on.
I got the full bike and swapped over some bits from my last bike but still think it broke even cost-wise (I got my store discount and sold the parts I took off), plus the bits I changed were all upgrades.
So, we have a 2010 Steamroller with original wheels, brakes, seatpost. Upgraded Hope headset, SRAM crank, White Industries freewheel, FSA stem, Cannondale OS bars, Tektro levers, Charge saddle and Halo Berlin Courier tyres.
I haven't looked back over this thread but it was only a few weeks ago I was wondering if I should get another Surly, you all said basically it's a no brainer and you were right.
    It rides like a beauty.

You could flip the stem to + rise and rearrange your spacers or cut

  • Sure, but this is perfect as it is. The stem that came with had more rise but I'm happy and comfortable with this position.

  • but I'm happy and comfortable with this position.

...even thought flipping the stem achieve the same position?

  • ...even thought flipping the stem achieve the same position?

not sure I understand your comment.
Is it 'even though' or 'ever thought'?
Either way, the stem is a +/- six degrees and would change the bar height if I flipped it, and I do want it the way it is.

  • he means you can get the same result by flipping the stem so its +6 degrees and dropping a couple of spacers out, and cutting more steerer off. merely asthetics so your choice if you want it to look neater.

I don't want to cut more steerer off or have less spacers or look neater, I have the stem this way because, as I said "after much thought", it works best and kind of future proofs me for having enough steerer in the future, my friend cut his lower and regretted it.
This is a working bike not porn.
And I wasn't unsure about the concept, just Ed's grammar... it's common no?

  • wo there, was clarifying. not contradicting.

  • Woah?
I wasn't upset, or ranting or whatever you think... I'm not now either. I'm pretty happy actually.

It's common to read someone's posts as snarky but if you read mine on a regular basis you'll work out that while I may have trouble taking much in real-life seriously I certainly don't get into many virtual-life word battles.

    I was clarifying too.
I appreciate the interest and the feedback but I thought about the stem and am happy with it.

  • Well Void, the more i see you about on it, the more I'm going to do something stupid and add another frame to the spare room.
Dammit - i really wanted to get some Mavic Ellipse's...

fair do's, don't think its just your posts you can misunderstand, its the whole concept of written/ typed text. no emotion or clue as to how its intended.

anyway, I like it the way it is and agree about future proofing.

  • After six months of sitting in my cupboard, I finally fitted the full-length mudguards I'd bough for my Steamroller. I used P-clips to attach to the front and back. Had to saw both struts of the stays at the front and one at the back. The rear was easier to fit because of this and had better clearance. The front bracket that attached to the brake could go higher, but only of I remove it and saw it in half. There is just enough clearance with my 25s and the narrowest SKS guards. Sorry for hazy pics, it is a grey day. Here are the results:

YEah, sweet! Matches the silver wheels

  • that look pretty awesome, you'll love the mudguard mate.

Thanks, Ed. I knew they would be right up your street.

detonics, I'm all about the silver.

    One more less fuzzy pic.

  • what saddle bag is that?

Looking good, David, I'd just tweak the curvature of the mudguards a little to be rounder, if you know what I mean. I have this problem on my road bike, too, although there it's mostly brought on by using mudguards of the wrong width (which I've been meaning to correct).

  • @ superjoe.

    carradice barley or the pendle.

  • Oliver, you are so right. More roundness needed.

    The bag is a Barley.

Even with the Bagman support, it can go wonky, especially if your load is uneven or lumpy. So, I put a stiffener in the base of it. Some of that cardboard mounting stuff in a clear plastic wallet - it's the same material used for estate agents boards. Got that tip from a CTC forum I think.

  • Finally got some decent wheels and fatter tyres to complete my 'Roller.

  • Mmm

Normally, gold components leave me cold, but I must say the gold and black works well. A Salsa seat clamp would suit your build v. nicely.

  • I didn't really intend the gold. The K710SL was recommended by someone on here as a nice quiet chain and hadn't really thought about how it was going to look, and then the guy who helped me build it up happened to have a gold headset spacer to set it off. The tubeset logo is gold so it all ties in. Think I'll de-sticker the rims and cover/remove some or all of the decals next. Maybe change SURLY to O RLY? on one side.

  • Here's mine in glorious shite iphone mode.

  • you should have cleaned the lense first
