  • I've heard a second hand report of a bike crushed under the front of a bendy bus in peckham this morning. It was opposite the library where the busses join the high street by subway and crackerjack.

Has anyone heard any more info? the guy I spoke to just saw the bike and no ambulances so hopefully noone was hurt.

  • nope

    But bump in case.

  • I'm in that area, and I've asked a couple of people. None of them has heard anything - hopefully it's more a case of 'bicycle down' than 'rider down'. I don't hate bendy buses as much as some other cyclists seem to... The driver has a fantastic field of view in front, and doesn't have a thing to do while moving except drive and watch the traffic.

  • i'm a peckham-ite, haven't heard anything at all...

  • Does anyone know details of an elderly cyclist knocked down on Peckam High street in mid July last year? I haven't seen any reports here or elsewhere, except one saying he died in September - that is outside the time limit for it to be recorded as a traffic casualty.

  • It may have something to do with this article published yesterday on the BBC:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12167981

  • "death by driving without due care and attention, causing death by driving an uninsured vehicle and failing to stop after an accident."

    £250 fine and a warning?

  • Death by careless driving is usually prison, but probably not enough. Lots of aggravating circumstances there though.

This accident is unrelated to the query above as it happened last year, tragic though it is. I wasn't aware of this one.

  • Tom, how are you doing by the way?

    Yup, you're absolutely right.

I was reading the article the day before this was posted which was the same day the article was published. Was wondering if the OP's info had anything to do with the article.

  • @Harold
What time of day was this?
A lot of forumites pass through here daily.

  • Think it was in the morning. The person who relayed it to me had just been to the fruit and veg market (covent garden I guess) so it must have been 9-10ish.

  • I normally go through there, around that time, but turn off by the library. I didn't see anything either, and haven't seen any other reports. I tried googling earlier and found nothing. hmmm.

  • ^same. Didn't see anything either.

    Yes, Tom, how you doing?

Sincerely hope you will be un-plastered for the start, if not the finish, of the next Guinness Ride.

No, a death by careless driving conviction means specifically **not **prison. 'Death by dangerous driving' usually points to prison. 'careless' driving has a lower threshold of proof, and isn't usually worse than a fine and disqualification. Even with the despicable, gutless failure to stop, *and *being uninsured, I can't see this guy going to jail.

    Yeah, I know.

I'm not sure if this belongs to this thread or the Gary Mason one, or both. 'Causing death by careless driving' is a new offence it can carry a jail sentence in the most serious cases. Failing to stop and not insured puts it into the serious category. Last month a driver in Oxfordshire got 9 months suspended sentence plus 200 hour community service for causing a motorway crash killing someone in the car in front.

  • I think that "in the most serious cases" is key here, though. IIRC the sentencing guidelines require a lot of aggravating factors (any of which should really be cause for a long, long ban at least) before the longer bans and prison even become available as a sentencing option.
