if you are both on o2 can you not do it instore? they should be able to give you a new micro-sim with your number on straight away?
i fucked around trying to cut my old sim to fit having been led to believe it would work but it didn't. sim would still work in old iphone using a sim adapter (made from magic tape and a bit of old credit card)
went into t-mobile shop round corner and they gave me a micro sim straight away that was working in new phone in minutes, i thought it would take a week to sort out.
