Best wheel size for polo

  • im building my first polo bike and have a small (18ish inch) hybrid for the frame. it has 24inch wheels. im thinking of getting 700c wheels as thats the cheapest and easiest way of getting a flip flop hub, as i cant afford to build my own. from the polo bikes ive seen in london 700xc is a bit larger than a lot of people use and i wont be able to get tyre that are as wide for the 700c, so what would people here recommend?

basically, stick with wide 24inch wheels, get cheap and easy 700c wheels or somthing else??

  • If you've got 24" wheels at the moment then you'll struggle to get 700c wheels into the frame. Most players use 700's as that is what fits their bikes, not the other way round.

You could try some 26" mtb wheels, will give you a decent choice of tyres and possible fit the frame, but there's no guarantee.

Why the need for the flip hub ?

  • from measuring up 700cs wheels from my other bike theyll fit, just. might get new forks anyway. id prefer a flip flop so i can get a decent sprocket for polo but also have a ratio to get to the polo court. i dont want to cycle several miles on 30-40 gear inches.

  • Fair enough, but I'd go for standard 26" mtb wheels with a single speed conversion kit. You can fit 2 sprockets on the same side and use a chain tensioner.

  • You might be able to fit the wheels but your brake mounts would be out of place. There are solutions and depending on what you want, braze on v brake mounts or clamp ons.

Best of luck with you build!
