Southend to hornchurch is my (really boring, A127) training ride.

Are you the mentalist that gets mentioned in this thread?

I dont think so! I use the (abysmal) cycle path unless its late. I sometimes train 12-6am though and ill use the road.

I rode along the A127 for a few miles when some of us rode to Southend (in 2008, I think). It was fine on the way out, as there wasn't that much motor traffic about, but in the evening there were heavy numbers and high speeds, so that I used the path on the footway.
The engineering on that road leaves a lot to be desired. I assume that it would have been widened from a single-carriageway road when first built, and it wasn't widened enough. From what I recall, visibility is very poor in places and the exit and entrance ramps that I saw were designed very badly. Lane widths are highly problematic and lead to very close overtaking. It feels constricted and seems to have a much greater 'channelling' effect (by which I mean that motorists feel well-'guided' at high speeds) than other A-roads one sees. Added to this, the alignment is obviously very good, probably based on a very old road, so that it attracts too much motor traffic just for that reason. I'm sure it used to attract the testers for the same reason.

This road , and A roads like it which may be the only route to a town, could start to be a problem. The SE corner of Essex along the Thames has parts where it 's starting to be impossible to cycle between towns.

Eventually it'll all become a huge London conurbation, and your only option will be a concatenation of hire bike legs, probably along a royal blue hard shoulder.

This. I cycle mostly at night if i want to get anywhere for this reason, but its not ideal.

Bringing the debate further North, the Epping New Road must be preserved as a safe cycle route out of East London or it will become a drag strip for footballers and their concubines.

I'm from Southend, you may have a point, I grew up in Leigh it's still a bit wanky.
I'm Chelmsford way now and commute across to Brentwood on a brown Steamroller with bullbars and an unsatisfactory beam and rack pack arrangement.
I go through Writtle and Margretting or Writtle and Blackmore. Shout out if you see me.

68 to be exact and as I am 47 I doubt I'll be in your road race!!! Got a baby of 16 months so time for cycling is limited these days and in great need of shedding the added winter pounds!

68 miles? I salute you, SIr.
Another Basildonian here!
Lived in Noak Bridge, Fryerns, Kingswood and Long Riding over the years. Sensibly moved to London's famous London now but I still miss it occasionally though.
oh and my biggest claim to fame home-town wise is that it was my Granddad (rip) who carved that wooden statue that used to be outside the towngate and the stone head that's since replaced it. This pretty much makes me bas-vegas royalty or something I believe.
