I know what you mean about the axles, but there are no cheap 48h "conventional" axled hubs available really (BLB may do the cheapest 48h hub now?). You can always file slots into the axles so they fit your frame/fork rather than the other way around? The thicker axle means your hub can take more of a beating (supposedly, I've only bent one axle on a polo hub before).
