It's bollox - it's part of their whole pricing strategy - you pay your membership via direct debit? So why a fee to join? So they get even more money out of people who go 3 times then realise it's shit going to a gym....

Never pay a joining fee... just tell them to fuck off or you'll go elsewhere. Its bullshit.

Also, when they call you to offer to set your program for no additional cost, and you turn up, and the bloke makes you wait half an hour until you crack the shits about being kept waiting, and then you get a 45 minute session with Rachel instead, and she tries to fucken upsell you to a series of personal training session just like the original prick would have done, tell her to fuck off in just the same way as you would have to the bloke who left you waiting and dont sign up for 3 fucking paid personal fucking training sesssions because she's sweet and beautiful.... like I fucking did this very fucking morning.
