Tour of Taiwan

  • Seems like their going back to 'old style' touring in Taiwan...
I wonder how long it would be till the Paris - Roubaix / TdBelgie / other classic short tours are fixed..?

Nabiis has been planning on a Tour de Taiwan for some time now.

This summer we will be riding fixed gears through the whole country.
On **5/30** (Sat) we will be leaving from Taipei. We will arrive back at Taipei on **6/8** (Mon).
The entire Tour de Taiwan will take **10 days** and will all be ridden on fixed gears.
We will ride clockwise around the entire island.
Starting from the East side of the island, we will make our journey to the west.
The total distance of this trip will be **1300 KM**
Touring the island on a fixed gear rarely happens.
This ride will be strenuous and dangerous.
On this Tour de Taiwan , we will face many challenges.
Come and join us, be part of the first Tour de Taiwan on fixed gears.

For the ride, Tour de Taiwan, Nabiis is humbly requesting sponsorship.

  • Dangerous, yes! Especially down the East Coast Highway which is incredibly spectacular and beautiful but is driven by lunatic betel nut chewing truck drivers.

Taiwan has some serious mountains so the climbs will be difficult. It's also quite humid and hot this time of year.

    Good luck to all involved!

  • +1 to the East Coast Highway being a stunning place to ride, but the drivers are nuts and those hills will be absolute killers.

  • that sounds like a challenging ride. best of luck to you all. i look forward to seeing the photos!

  • Am off to Taiwan tomorrow eve for 16 days, will be cycling wherever I can, will add some pics up here when I'm back. Think there's a pretty big cycling movement going on over there at the mo, should be fun

  • are there any guys on here from taiwan ?

someone i met recently is heading out to taiwan and is looking for some people to hook u pwith ride with ? anyone on here have any contacts / friends / are actually living out there currently ?

  • I'm going to Taiwan in the 22nd November to visit my grandma. I grew up most summers in taiwan, my mother is Taiwan Chinese, my dad HK Chinese. I'm thinking of doing a ride, roiginally solo when I was go out there.

if you're looking for contacts, go to www.forumosa.com, they are the hugest community (English speaking etc).
All I have to say is:

Get in touch, I'm gonna be there 22nd Nov to 4th December. I'm thinking of hiring.

  • I have been meaning to make an update of this, so I did 130 mile solo trip cross-country, after visintg Grandma and mum's side of the family, just got a train out from Taipei (capital city). PS That 30 miles was a bit of a non-sequiter into an off-road valley path, ended up in some fields of baby bananas and stuff.

I picked up a bike from one of the Giant stores (soft launch, not much info out there) in hualiane and returned it at Taichung, halfway down the country. Stayed over night in ReiSuei, just rolled up and asked in the village where was ok and ended up staying with a family who grew polemos. Awesome cycling infrastructure, each cop station has air, water etc. and signage is really good. I lost my map on the second day at 8am setting out on the second half. Dinner on the first night was at this amazing restaurant festooned with hundred of bike crew and motorbike crew touring photoes. Bumped into 2 Japanese journalists touring by bike doing a cycle report and on my flight into the country, I had a whole documentary film crew sitting in front of me getting shots of sleeping long-haul passengers and were doing a film commission by Giant/Merida.
Second day lunch was in a restaurant converted from two steam-train carriages from the japanese occupation years ago. The scenery was completely breathtaking, it was all photo porn.

    Here are some pictures.

if I were to go back, definitely do Taroko Gorge, which is insanely amazing and possibly do it with other people though I love solitary rides. It was good to see where I grew up in a slightly different way.

  • I am not sure the FB photo album settings are correct as I could only see one photo. Would be keen to see the rest.

Taroko is great. It's a lot of climbing once you get out of the Gorge. It takes a few hours by car. There's quite a few places to stay round that area though.

  • +1 would love to see the pics, was there in 2000
