  • Have you looked at the list on page 1?

    EDIT:
Actually, someone has edited my post, because there were 2 Magnum locks listed, and now there're none?
I shall correct that. Apols. The Magnum locks of 16mm thickness are good locks.

  • Slap one of those OnGuard mini U-locks on it....

Do OnGuard sell their Mini U-Locks here now? I've looked for them before, and only found them in the States.
Where are they sold? I'd be quite interested in the Brute Mini, and not the Bulldog Mini.

Just out of interest why are you interested in this? Isn't it the equivalent of a Krypto fug mini?

It should he cheaper, and also I've not heard of any OnGuard Brute lock being defeated in the theft of any forumenger's bike. Of course they CAN be broken, but the lack of this happening is very encouraging.

The Brute Mini is an epic lock that I would definitely buy. Shame its still not sold here.

Any thoughts on the mangnum locks? Gold rated apparently.

And FINALLY, its on sale here (I think). The Halfords sold Magnum lock (with cable), does appear to be the OnGuard Brute Mini (rebadged). http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_231103_langId_-1_categoryId_165637

Quite different to the longer shackled version.

  • This is probably the right thread for this question:

I seem to remember someone posting up a link to a website that sold no nonsense track nuts that require a special spanner (possibly triangular?) to loosen them. I know they can't compete with Pitlocks for security, but it's primarily for added peace of mind on days when I leave the house quickly and forget my second lock.

Searched for ages but couldn't find it. Any help appreciated as always.

  • Its on the first page of this thread.....in the list, and in the Skewer Locks section.

  • After reading this useful thread and a lot elsewhere I’ve decided I’m going to buy a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini for my first proper bike. I’d like to also get a secondary lock for the front wheel as well but I’m unsure what to go for this and am after advice if possible.

My road bike is custom built by a mate from a re-sprayed 80s steel frame and a mix of old retro and new parts. It cost me £400 and I’ll be buying a decent set of racks plus a Shimano dynamo front wheel on top of that. I live in North Wales and will be regularly locking it up in the carpark by Bangor uni for extended periods, should be a safe-ish area I’d imagine, certainly compared to London. When it’s at home it’ll be in my bedroom.

I’d prefer a second different sort of lock for it and don’t fancy the taking it off and locking to the back option. I’ve considered buying an Almax III, but really I think it’s overkill for my budget and bike and though it could be left in place at uni it would be a b*tch to transport anywhere else and impractical for going on cycle trips or anything. With my sort of set-up any suggestions for an appropriate secondary lock for the front dynamo wheel?

  • don't get me wrong, i love this list, but you guys are listing the price of the fahgettaboudit mini as £55 from CRC... when i follow the link it throws it up as £85

  • This actually gets me very angry. I had listed that lock as available from Parker International, and someone else has at different times, edited the list as suits them.

I'll change it back, but I expect the person who did this in the first place can still go ahead and fuck the list up as they please. Nothing I can do about that. Sorry though.

  • I have a couple of locks for my bikes now

krypto fagh chain (kept at work due to weight)
krypto min fagh d (carried around in my bag but have a fabric horse in the post for it at the moment)
krypto mini evo (have bracket on my commuter bike but also got a fabric horse on the way for this too).
krypto 4ft cable (carried around in backpack to wrap round front wheel and then lock up into one of the mini d's)

ignoring the use of the fagh chain completely as locking up at work is well covered I'm thinking that I need another lock as my insurance requires a sold secure silver or higher rated lock and the mini fagh doesnt fit the bill (which is really fucking stupid by the way) so while I use it around frame, rear wheel and fixing point as it's my strongest lock I still have to use the mini evo as an anchor around the frame to an 'immovable object' or my insurance isn't valid.

the problem with that is it's really fucking hard to lock up anything else once the mini evo is around the frame and the fixing point (when I can find one it fits around) so in order to keep my front wheel 'secure' I also need to use a kryptonite cable which I'm sure if a thief had come across my bike up until now would have made them laugh for a second as they chopped it and walked off with my wheel regardless.

at the moment I'm thinking the version of the mini evo with the long shackle (24cm i believe) would instead allow me to lock front wheel and frame to a mounting point and the mini fagh can keep doing what it does with the frame, rear wheel and mounting point negating the need for a cable at all. I can carry the fagh mini on my belt and the long shackle mini evo on my frame for most journeys and if need be use the spare mini evo in the other fabric horse if I'm feeling extra paranoid about my destination and want a third lock just to increase the overall amount of time needed to get the bike free.

the main issue is I don't know if the long shackle mini evo would reduce it's effectiveness and make it more prone to leverage attacks or if I should perhaps look at another brand of lock as I already feel a bit of a krypto whore right now as it is.

edit: just found the fully fledged evo 4 d-lock for the same price (£30) perhaps that's the best route for me?

  • GA2G: Not the ones I was thinking of. Those are skewers and the ones I was thinking of were just tracknuts for solid axel hubs that can’t have skewers replaced. I’m not sure they’d be much more secure than a standard hex nut, but I was interested to weight up my options. Cheers anyway though... I’ll try trawling again.

HatBeard: I think common sense ought to trump Sold Secure, so I wouldn’t worry about it (obviously this is just my personal feeling, and perhaps shouldn’t be recommended).
I don’t have insurance. I lock up with a Krypto M18 round rear wheel, frame and object, and mini evo through front wheel and frame. I don’t leave it outside like this for longer than 30 mins unless I can check on it easily (sitting in a caf or ducking out of a pub for a fag every so often). From reading this thread from beginning to end, I feel this is all the insurance I need. Your setup is better than mine due to the Fagh’s thicker shackle and less space for leverage, but if you can’t check on it regularly, then maybe it would be good to get a third lock. But I can’t help but think that it’s overkill and needless expense just because the rating system insurers use is poor.

Sorry... Not really the advice you were hoping for. I’m sure someone else will have a view on this that might be more helpful.

The nuts are £2 and the tool is a tenner, have not tried them as I normally ulock my wheels so don't know how good they are.

  • ^ That's the badger! Cheers Erudin. They're pretty cheap so might give em a go anyway and if they're no cop then it's no great tragedy.

Edit: Just noticed they don't seem to have washers attached. What's the verdict on this, as I'm not a mechanic?

  • Probably the best bike lock? When I was a copper I used my issue handcuffs - one round the wheel / frame, the other to a lamp post or similar. Result - me and my old bike are still together and I don´t mean that in a derogatory way.

  • ^ I don't think a pair of handcuffs could ever be more secure than a 18mm shackle D-lock, ossifer. It would be irresponsible to recommend this method anywhere like London where bike crime is an issue.

If your bike said 'POLICE' on the downtube, maybe that's what kept it safe? Otherwise, I'd chalk it up to locking up in secure or low risk areas. Or just very very good luck.

  • Well said Japeseye. I hadn't wanted to be rude, but it was frankly the worst and most ridiculous comment I've read in some time, as advice on bicycle locking. Any boltcutter would have that off in less than 5 seconds.

Police handcuffs looks best when having apprehended the wife, and shackled her in her peek-a-boo. Don't forget the pink feather boa.

  • Have anyone actually though that he's talking about the newer kind of handcuff rather than the old shackle one?

Netherless still a bad idea, especially when it's designed to hold a person's hand together rather than a proper lock.

  • Your´re spot on Edscoble and I still contend they were a safer bet then most commercially available cheapskate offerigs

  • Your´re spot on Edscoble and I still contend they were a safer bet then most commercially available cheapskate offerigs

The GPRS 18mm lock is less than £20, as is the Motrax Disclok. I'd wager that those "cheapskate" locks outlast a pair of handcuffs by an enormous margin. You are comparing 1-2mm of steel (the round bit that goes around the wrist) to 20mm approx of steel (through the diagonal cross-section of a square shaped U-lock bar).

  • This brings me to a price rise for the GPRS U-locks.

I popped into *A.E.Wilson Cycles* today, and found out *the popular 18mm version, with the squared bar, is now £16.50*.
*The 16mm round barred version is £15.00 approx*. Both are good deterents, but obviously the 18mm gets my vote.
Mainly because of the squared barrel, but also due to the 18mm thickness. I'll amend the list.

  • Me and my old bike are still together and I don´t mean that in a derogatory way.

Unusual for a copper to have a stable marriage...

  • There's little point in cutting a lock if you have the key.

I can only wonder why our esteemed copper left the force. I'm sure they're lost without him.

  • The advise I always give is to lock your bike with the cheapest lock that your insurance company will allow you to have in order to receive a payout. A thief will take your bike if they really want to, so it's more about getting the insurance than anything.

  • anyone got any thoughts on the new pinhead' bubble lock? uses the same key as the pinhead skewers and has a sliding channel for the key so it slides into the lock's crossbar before you actually unlock it so it's harder to pick the lock.

gets sold secure gold for whatever that's worth but looks fecking massive and comes with a carrying bag to strap to your bike that looks about as practical as a third pedal.

edit: nevermind it's not new at all. just got my wires crossed thanks to an oddly worded email from pinheads and the fact i'd not seen it until now.

  • so is that the brute mini at halfords, and if so how much does it weigh?

  • Yes, as far as I can see, the Halfords Magnum Plus Mini = the OnGuard Brute Mini (5112). I couldn't find a weight for it anywhere, just for the lock itself, but in many places it describes the posted weight as 4.65lbs. So subtracting some cardboard and plastic, it would still be over 4lbs in weight. Not surprising, as its the only true 18mm barrel U-lock that OnGuard do.

  • Ello, been thinking about a new lock, but something light for when its more summery, for those days i don't want to carry anything(bag) and just ride, but may want to pop in a shop quick and get a drink

so i just want something to put over my shoulder or around my waist, either a light chain or thick cable

at the mo' i just use a £5 tesco lock around my shoulder and £5 mini oxford cable lock if im traveling light, but i want something more beefy, but not mini D beefy that shakes around in my holster when i pedal fast

    any recommendations?
