Andy, you appear to not have experienced the plethora of truly shit mechanical disc brakes out there in the world.
I've got a halfords bikehut branded thing, looks like a copy of a bb7 (independent pad adjustment both sides) but it can't be set up to even lock the brake, never mind modulation.
BB7's are great (I have those too) they're in a whole different league.
Hydro-discs are all pretty good, even shit ones. But Mech-discs range from godawful to godamn amazing. If you'd like to experience this for yourself send me your address and I'll put the world worst discbrake in the post for you.
