It's totally possible, disc calipers require the same amount of cable pull as a v-brake. If you run double brakes, you should not get skid spots so much anyway. The rotors do get damaged whilst playing polo, more or less depending on how you ride, I have broken 1 rotor and bent another 5 i guess, some bend back really well, others don't. You may want to build some kind of guard to protect the rotor.

So i presume the way to run the rear disc brake is to have a cable pull as opposed to hydrolic (or whatever the term is), a Rik Industries lever or similar pulling on both disc and V. It's my intention to put some sort of rotor guard on the disc.
Thanks for the reply.

One thing though you might consider, in my experience discs can be bent with impact fairly easily, which then makes them catch/rub etc.

That's what I said, the rotor does get bent, make a guard, then it's not such a problem.
Yes, cable actuated discs are great, hydraulic are a pain, not easy to maintain courtside. Get Avid BB7 disc brake, they're as powerful as any hydraulic single pot brake.

ah sorry was skimming through the posts.
can you use a motocross style guard?
-

too big, too heavy, look in the polo bikes thread, there's some examples in there somewhere

how can you skim 3 posts?

I've just ordered a Pompetamine frameset deal from On-One and i'll go with the Avid brakeset that Gabes recommended, any suggestions on rear wheel hub, rim, spoke count?
Will post pics when completed.

Cable dics brakes are shite in comparison to a well set up V.

^ No, Avid BB5/7s are at least as powerful as Vs, and stay as powerful in the wet.

If it's 135mm, disc, singlespeed, your options (for reasonable money) are limited. I'd say the DMR (£40-50) or Hope if you can afford to splash the cash (the freehub should be more reliable than most freewheels, and changing gear ratios/chainline is lots easier.

That's total rubbish. Cable discs are way better than Vs, and also, Vs, even super well set up, suffer in the rain.

That's not total rubbish. Thats an observational comment coming from experience.

I guess your cable disc brakes were set up badly then.

Or just cheap mechanical discs. They are almost always worse than equivalently priced Vs.
-
• #17
Freehubs give out pretty quick in the Halo Spin doctors (avoid those). Go on singletrackworld and buy some cheap Hope XC or Pro11 stuff. DMR Revolvers are pretty solid for the money too, but they use a freewheel. You pays yer money
Avid BB7's are awesome, but most other mechanical discs are shite.

Rubbish.

Can you see where the problem is.
As gabe says, even shit discs perform better in the wet than v's (without gettinto the realms of ceramic rims).

Andy, you appear to not have experienced the plethora of truly shit mechanical disc brakes out there in the world.
I've got a halfords bikehut branded thing, looks like a copy of a bb7 (independent pad adjustment both sides) but it can't be set up to even lock the brake, never mind modulation.
BB7's are great (I have those too) they're in a whole different league.Hydro-discs are all pretty good, even shit ones. But Mech-discs range from godawful to godamn amazing. If you'd like to experience this for yourself send me your address and I'll put the world worst discbrake in the post for you.

if you expect anything from a halfords bike, you are insane.

The brake came to me for free and I thought "how bad can it be?"

Your problem lies here.
Thanks for the offer but I'll stick to my Hopes.

not even willing to take it to try and prove that it's better than a V? It truly is an awful piece of shit.
-

Yes but it was only ever designed to be a piece of shit. I'm sure it has more power than Vbrake equipped version of the same bike.
I have an idea for a new polo setup that I want to explore, i've been toying with the idea of getting an Il Pompino for some time and I may still get this but I want to get over the freewheel skid problem - the wheel goes out of true and you skid out on spot on the tyre. I figured with a disc brake at the back this wouldn't be such a problem as hopefully the braking will remain smooth on a disc, i'd be putting a disc guard on too.
My first question is : How suitable is a rear disc brake for polo? I've never used disc brakes before.
Second: If it's worth using, is it possible to create some sort of dual pull setup with a V on the front? Say with an On-One Pompetamine with Identiti forks and canti bosses?
I might be over engineering a bike in my head but I really want to solve the rear wheel issue skid patch thing. Perhaps I just need some better wheels with loads of spokes built well and strong and dual pull Vs.
Help appreciated.
