  • I've just hit submit, and it's processing. I tried to pay, but it says I owe nothing - does it take a while to sort itself out? I'm going to leave it until tomorrow and have another look. The deadline for actually making the payment is later than the deadline for actually filing, isn't it?

If runs slowly it means you have been selected for further investigation, I just hope that you have the last 7 years worth of accounts handy as they will go though them with a fine toothed comb.

I know as I work for the Tax Office as an investigator.

  • Diable, you've crossed a line with that joke, you c*nt...

    :)

    Repped...

No. You have to file and pay by the 31st. If your payment is less than £1k (I think) you can ask for them to collect it through your PAYE coding, so you don't have to write a cheque.

    I am a Diablerist ;p

  • It's still saying I have nothing to pay. Very confused.

  • It also says that I filed it on the 16th, but I didn't...

  • Sorted, paid, done, over for another year, hooray, hooray, I've paid my tax and done my bit and it's all finished.

    I'm off to work.

  • I'm off to work.

Until sometime in May for the Government, after that for myself.

  • Ouch.

  • your nighttime activities
    don't bring those to light

    those poor horses

  • Nope. It's not the deadline yet - why would I?

  • how bonkers am I for considering whether my bike is a tax deductible expense as self employed? I mean, I do really rely on the thing.

depending on your job it is.

If you rely on your bike (courier) you can claim the entire bike, otherwise you can claim a 20p tax rebate per mile you cycle. Not sure if you can do both.

  • the 20p tax rebate would still make a difference. the amount of miles you travel essentially becomes your commute plus an estimate of the errands you make etc?

  • how about considering waterproofs etc as work clothing and therefore tax deductible?

I am not a courier but I need the bike for work as I do errands and cycle to meet clients.

  • hmm... seems I'd be stretching it a bit there.

    thanks hippy.

  • starfish,
you should keep a log of mileage to claim.

once you claim mileage you are not allowed to claim running costs (tyres tubes etc) on top of that.

I did this back in the days of being self employed and it worked out much better to claim mileage than anything else.

  • Oh, I thought I was so clever. Did my tax return a bit early, as is not at the last possible moment.

Then I realised that instead of paying X I was actually receiving a rebate for overpaying X. Guess it was such an alien possibility that I didn't consider or notice - just saw a figure and paid it.

Then I noticed that exact same amount arrive IN my account. So I paid X, same week received X.

Guess I should be happy, but I'm just annoyed that I have to sort it all out now and try and get the money back.

    :)

    RPM
Just wondering, was your log of mileage backed by any hard evidence (photos of the meter readings I suppose?)?
What did your accountant (if you had one) think of it?

  • Right, so who else has left it till last minute? Currently about a third of the way through my mountain of receipts. Really gotta get this shit organised.

  • I did mine about 2 weeks ago. luckily not too difficult as I i did all my self employed stuff for one company before switching back to PAYE. found it much easier to fill out this year (2nd) compared to last year (1st year of doing it) did leave it later than I should. but then being an accountant I kinda knew what I should have been paying anyway.

  • I'm trying to remember when my login and pin is.
Receipts are somewhere around my desk (if my wife hasn't chucked them away).
