Hi Guys and girls!!
I have been lurking for a while but its the new year so time to get out and about riding!!!
Im have got hold of an old dawes frame im building up... Im after a cottered crankset and chain wheel and some cheap and nasty weinman or simillar brakes which would reach a 27" wheel.

I have some cotters you can have for free, but they are attached to a frame (which you can also have).

I have a 26" coaster brake hub laced 4X to a DMR DV rim, with a tube and an old continental travel something or other tyre, that I wish to sell or swap for a disc specific mtb wheel with a nice mavic rim on it. Anyone got anything? Singlespeed would be ideal, but I would consider cassette.

How did you get on with having a coaster brake? I bought a hub and was planning to build it into a wheel for a retro simple singlespeed bike. But Im starting to have doubts as it feels so damn heavy! Also concerned about never bein gable to reset crank position when setting off from traffic lights etc.

The main thing that attracted me was the idea of good strong braking in wet weather. It currently brakes poorly as it has steel rims. If I build the new wheels with alloy rims, I wonder if the old style calipers would be sufficient enough for good braking?

If you're gonna be using clips or cleats you can reset crank position by pulling your front brake and pedaling forwards like you might do when riding fixed. With flat pedals it's what's known as a 'right ball-ache' ... as you can imagine.

The coaster brake was ok. A little heavy, took some getting used to, but was fine in the wet, in the snow and (very occaisonally) in the dry. My plan was to convert a mountain bike into a commuter/shopper with it, but now its a mountain bike again so i'm gonna just get another back wheel that will work with the disk brakes.

You can't pedal backwards to move the crank, but as you can't do that with fixed either it didn't bother me too much.

You have to get a balance between small cog = more powerful braking but less modulation and big cog = more modulation but you have to pedal back more to stop eventually.

It is rad for skids, a quick stomp on the pedals and your fishtailing everywhere, but equally good for slowing slowly on snow.

Its a bit weird not being able to move the cranks when slowing though...

I read that you need to have a large cog on the coaster hubs to give you adequate braking power.

Off-topic FREECYCLE: two desks. Good quality and good condition. Free to whoever wants them, pick-up from Digbeth. Just thought I'd pop them on here before I go on freecycle with them.

Simple - they're 140 cm by 70 cm (78 if you measure from the flat edge to where the extrusion is). I've already take the legs off. Hadn't realised before how like baseball clubs they are.

Void - actually, they're not Ikea, although to be fair if I had just seen the picture I probably would have thought the same. Not sure what make they are (they were inherited from a language school) but they are quite solid with heavy metal frames under the work surfaces. We've brought them with us when moving house from another country (!) but we absolutely need to make more room in the flat, so...
