Cycling on NYE.. good idea?

  • What with all the free travel (which will doubtless be rammed on NYE) I'm tempted to get on the bike. Thing is, I don't like cycling around crazy saturday night drivers as it is, I'm just assuming it will be better than waiting for the night bus... has anyone cycled to a NYE venue? I'm not drinking, so assume I'll be able to see the road :-)

  • If you are staying within zone 1 it might be easier just to use a cycle hire bicycle, that's what I plan to do.

  • I'd just use a hire bike (I think they're £1 for 24 hrs now?!), or get the tube. If its free then goforrit!

  • I'm riding. I know what you mean about crazy driving but I reckon it's preferable to the night bus.

I think you're a girl? So if you do ride be prepared for the drunk people who think it's fun to shout stuff at girls on bikes.

  • Thanks all! I'm planning to park the bike for bit at London bridge, take the train to peckham, party, bus from peckham to London bridge and then bike back to Hackney. So mixing it up!

And yes, I am a girl - used to bike hecklers!

  • parking by london bridge might not be the best idea.

  • why do they do free travel?

bump up the prices so the suburban freeloaders dont swamp our streets

  • if your in london bridge, you might as well ride to peckham

As a suburban freeloader I wasn't going to use any transport tonight but I think I might now. NYE ridin' the Tube. Sweet.

  • there's a toll on my street

  • it is a good idea, i plan to cycle tonight. It isnt that far to cycle from london bridge to peckham, i live in between the two and do the route often.

  • Many of the Barclays Hire stations will be closed for NYE apparently.

  • I did half an hour on the rollers. It seemed okay. Nothing bad happened.

  • I've just run out of beer- time to jump in the car and get some more.

If you see a red Volvo estate, wave.

  • questionable decision there.......drinking then driving?
although i did just drive to the supermarket to buy three crates of beer for £20!
now to cycle to my friends party with as many of those beers in my bag as possible!

  • Drink a slab first, then ride. That way, you only have 2 to carry.

    Alcohol free beer?

  • Great Idea to ride tonight
are there fire works by the thames somewhere?

  • Alcohol free beer?

    Aye, having a dry NYE.

  • Aye, having a dry NYE.

FFS, it's like doing legal highs!

  • Hello, bit late, but just cycled with my cousin from Brentwood (Essex) to central london for the fireworks and then back again.

Alot of cars between Elephant and Castle roundabout and London Bridge, but was easy to circumvent with a bike.

Quite a few people driving on mobiles on the way back, but was alright - no obvious drink driving.

The only annoying thing was wasted people shouting abuse at us, but hailing from Essex, we were used to that. Loadsa smashed glass on the roads though.

  • FFS, it's like doing legal highs!

Some legal highs are quite good.. right before they are made illegal usually.

I'd rather drink water than alcoboozefreebier

  • Rode up the A10 around half 2. There were a fair few idiotic examples of driving, but I wouldn't say it was all that bad. A few people parked in the craziest of places and a few being a bit aggressive with their right foot the moment they saw a few metres of open road.

Not a particularly pleasant ride, but not as bad as park lane in rush hour, for example.

    Quick - stockpile coffee!

  • did it - the ride was great! I recommend it, zooming past shivering tired people waiting for buses was amusing...
