  • Very nice number6.

  • Yeah it looks lovely, the colour is great.

  • I got this going including a few parts...

  • Hi taki, yeah I saw that one a while ago but wasn't sure how much of a tourer it is, have you ridden it loaded ever? I've been trying to work it out from the geometry surly gives and it looks almost exactly the same as the lht except for chainstay length and bb drop, angles are the same and sizing very similar.

  • People do tour with Cross-Checks, off top of my head I'm struggling to remember where I can link to for proof but a trawl through Flickr will certainly provide pics of touring set-up Cross-Checks.
I've rode both, own a Cross-Check, which I intend to tour with extensively as soon as life lets me.

  • i never rode it fully loaded although had a rear rack etc on there at one point, i intended to tour on it but funds don't allow that at the moment, haha. it's basically got all the braze-ons you need for racks and fenders on the front and rear, and yeah it's extremely similar to the lht, although slightly more internal gear hub friendly...

  • Had a think about the crosscheck and I think I'll hold out for something more touring specific, I hope to give it a lot of use so I may as well go for a full on tourer with a bit of extra stability, the chainstays on the LHT are a fair whack longer.

  • You not goin for the raleigh/ fred james?

  • Well number6 said it was going on ebay a few days ago (though I haven't seen it on there) and I haven't got a reply to a question or two in a few days so I'm not banking on it.

  • Thats not good, shame because its a lovely frame.

  • hey Adroit - do you still have the dawes G frame? I'm wanting to do lejog in a few weeks and it sounds a perfect frame to built upon. It's probably gone by now but if you are still offering it up for karma (or a few beers etc) then I would be pleased to take it off your hands.

I'm a new member here so can't PM you but have posted over on bike radar. Cheers.

  • apologies -particularly to Schnell

have had mad few days - still not got around to the stand over height measurement - it's up in the loft tucked away.

it's gone on ebay now ( i'll try to get stand over up on there.) as i set it up on scheduled listing before even mentioning here - sorry i guess i'll have to let it run there now- very tight on actual cash after the winter bargain hunting but i've tons of bits i have to sell definitively and ASAP- for living expenses plus to fund another unholy buying mission at the velodrome jumble in a few days

    p.s.
from what i understand CX bikes don't make good tourers -aside from the lack of fixing points - they'll be a tight and compact racing geometry and will get uncomfortable on long rides and twitchy with loads on . the only real (and misleading) commonality is the clearance for wide tyres.

Yeah cheers, no problem at all, I thought it'd be something like that. I was looking through your other ton of stuff on the 'bay too, some nice frames and bits. At the moment I've got an offer of a Jackson world tour frameset on the ctc forum, very nice, very pricey, and I'm trying to organise collection/delivery, so that'll hopefully work out and I'll be sorted.

edit: Yep that's why I'm trying to stay away from cross frames, I've toured on one before and fully loaded it was very unstable, the wheelbase wasn't nearly long enough so anything that required taking my hands off the bars felt wobbly as did standing on the pedals, it felt like the bike was wagging it's tail the whole time.

  • i'm pretty sure a lot of older club frames (the kind of all-rounder thing they had in the '50s when you only owned one bike) would make very nice light to medium tourers too.

the 27" wheel frames give tons of clearance - i'm sure they had a much more relaxed geometry than todays criterium fixated geometries. they are never labelled as tourers but often make a really good cheap base.
