  • Just been looking up sum'at on The Sun website - very galling to see a rolling advert for Gumtree with bike, after bike, after bike going across the top of the page, many looking rather too good to be true.

Reminds me of the rant about how seriously Gumtree takes the sale of stolen bikes - just sayin.

  • 36 hours no sleep caught up with me and i overslept. ho hum. keeping an eye on bikeshd, but not emotionally attached to the bike (only had it 2 weeks, plus its just a mass produced bike..), just super pissed off of having to fucking fuss with insurance again (esp. over new year+xmas) and not being able to work as there is only one pushbike at my company atm. but is a good excuse to be out of the cold, and my mum is happy to see me more. mothers.

  • Josh, that suck terribly, do you want to borrow the Pompino again (and lending you a Fah Mini if so!).

  • potentially when i get back after xmas thanks, i have a fahg, but you trying carrying that shit around and locking up 20 times a day! going to get another mini evo and lock up my fahg somewhere central so if i'm going out after work i can use that.

  • ditto with weird MTB thingy I have, but again you'd have to come up to Notts to pick it up.

  • I work at the Design Against Crime Research Centre, and we are working on a project in association with the Design Council, which attempts to address problems of residential bicycle theft. I know there have been reports in the stolen bikes thread of people having their bikes stolen from inside their home, gardens, etc. So if you have been a victim of bicycle theft from the home, we would value your input into our survey. • anyone lost a Tifosi track bike?
    this seems very dodgy
    http://www.gumtree.com/london/74/70862374.html

  • Yes you are stuck with it.

the wheel/frame lock is usually varied on what bike you have, some (like the Bob Jackson in the photo) have a closer clearance between the wheel and the seattube allowing enough room for the Fah to lock properly.

However some bike have a much larger clearance (those are usually design for mudguard), so the gap is greater between the wheel and seat tube, the other method is instead of locking the rear wheel + seat tube, simply lock the rear wheel + seat stay instead as it's easier (as displayed in the photo below).

my bike is the latter, the solution? I went for the longer version of the Fah; The M18

    Great choice in tyre

  • Had my ride stolen. british racing green gary fisher single speed with neon green bartape, drop bars, white seat.

    my ride:

    google picture:

something like this but green bartape.

at the time it was stolen it had:
    -neon green bartape.
    -oldish "silver" shimano spds
    -light taped to the stem
-light taped (with holder) to the seatpost (one of those long lights with many leds)
-DIY mudguard (cut in half bottle secured with tape)
of cause those things might be taken off.

    frame no: removed

call me if you see anything
    **removed

  • Have seen a, im pretty sure yellow, Bianchi track, freewheel with no rear brake and white aerospoke on the front around rye lane, peckham. The guy riding it seems to like to stop and show it off to groups of guys who lift it and admire it. seems a little sketchy to me!

    Anybody had one stolen?

  • anyone knows that that site is called where you can see pictures of the lastest bikes put on gumtree, ebay etc etc?

    edit:

  • /\ what an amazing idea

  • Went to brick lane today. no luck. however I did spot two fgss bikes that looked a bit dodgy.

one is a claud butlet, blue, multi colour wheels, front brake
other was a red bike, layed back leathertaped handlebars. bar end brakelevelers. dual brake.

  • Had my beloved Carlton stolen in Camberwell on NYE, 1959 Catalina conversion.

and are you hazems brother??? pretty sure i met you once, unless there are other hass tagiuri's out there?

  • Hi you all

Hope you all had a good festive break I have sad news to relate the Tiger bike
which features in the Bicycles of Hackney Poster
http://www.flickr.com/photos/funny_cyclist/3500497271/in/set-72157624389640843/(middle, second row down) was stolen in Angel last when my daughter was out with friends. If anyone sees the bike can you tell me as although it is worth little
made entirely from found parts, it has great sentimental value to my daughter.

    My e-mail is adamt201(at)gmail.com

  • I am stunned by the amount of thefts on here...I only use a kryponite on my Charge, locked through frame and an a wheel. Should I use more? The wheels on my bike aren't exactly quick release and I'm guessing clued up bike thieves realise that an OTF peg like mine isn't worth nearly as much as some custom/bespoke job?

  • That's a shame!
I will keep an eye out for ya.....

    Have a look here - http://www.lfgss.com/thread52914.html and http://www.lfgss.com/thread17938.html

IMO it's about what the thief can get rid of quickly. A conventional, new, clean OTP is very satisfactory to a bike thief. I don't think they particularly care if it has vintage Record hubs or whatever. Personally I employ a modified, less scatological Tynan method in addition to a good lock - dirt and surface rust ftw.

  • If anything that look worth nicking in the quickest possible way, they'll nick it.

new OTP are easier to sell, especially when the average hybrid are generic black bike with flat bar - very hard to trace.

Useful thread, ta! Although also slightly alarming re: skills of bike thieves...will have to invest in another set of pinhead style locks I reckon. Had them on my hybrid and that's been left all over London with a kryptonite lock and still in my posession

Good point...will probably not get someone to poop on it though!

  • yea man your post got merged in to this one, more people will see it here...

keep your eyes on ebay, gumtree the usuals and get to brick lane early sunday, as it was nicked east, itl probably stay east!

i am indeed a mate of paynes and yer brosephs, went to uni with tom, think you came to our student digs a few years back?!

good luck with the search man.

  • HI all

My beloved Slack Cycling fixie was stolen from flats in fulham (Lillie Road) this morning 7th jan. This bike was handmade to measure for me so i am mortified to lose her. Any help with its recovery would be greatly appreciated.
