  • I've seen them in two of them - Becton and Leyton.

  • Want.

I really like my helly hanson base layer, even though it's not pure merino. Now my normal clothes feel so cold...

  • I have two (eddy), still going strong after two and a bit years.

  • There's a rather entertaining video with some male and female models showing off the merino underwear.

  • These are pretty good value even with the rather pricey postage costs. My Russell top arrived today and does what it says on the tin...

  • I ordered some of their stuff this week, no confirmation email and no package received, they have charged my card though, cnts.

  • I've got my gloves today from them after a couple of days. Did you choose Royal Mail or the courier option?

  • You'll find at this time of year post will take a lot longer. I didn't receive any email confirmation but did arrive.

  • Got a merino base layer for Christmas, but not sure on the fit. Should it be tight fitting, or is a little loose okay? I.e. it's a medium, not sure to change it for a small?

  • Should hug your body so there isn't any space between the material and your skin.

If there's space it won't be able to do it's job properly and keep you warm/wick sweat away from your skin.

    This looks so badass: http://shop.hellyhansen.com/GB/item/48865/

I got one of the classic HH tops which I wear all the time on my bike: http://shop.hellyhansen.com/GB/item/48800/

Want to get the warmer version: http://shop.hellyhansen.com/GB/item/48877/

As a baselayer should be fitting under a jersey that is tight the baselayer should also be snug.

For a lot of the cold snap I have just been wearing a longsleeve merino baselayer and either the rapha track top or breton jumper (both are just knitted merino top) and that has been enough to stop me getting cold when on the bike. Testament to how good merino is.

  • Amazon have some excellent prices on the Helly Hansen base layer stuff - for example the Ice Crew is only £25 (£40 in shops, £32 on eBay):

  • im wearing lilac merino, its too big for me and makes me look older.

  • bspoke have a massive discount on merino at the minute.......

    https://www.bspoke.co.uk/

base layers for £15....zipped ones for £18.

    70% off, apparently.

  • But their stuff is generally horrible!

  • but it's worth a go for that sort of dough, surely!!

I know its not Rapha, but as a base layer to keep you warm, it's the cheapest I've seen

  • well done fella!!

  • Generally you want a baselayer to fit snugly and well if its going to go under a close fitting race jersey. Given the generally appalling cut of the bspoke garments I'd be wary.

  • Just get the HH stuff, it's quality.

DJ is right, the cut of the bspoke baselayer is appalling, especially for a cycling specific garment. It's cut short in all the places it needs to be long, i.e. the back and the arms.

  • aldi base layers on sale tomorrow:

    http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_16954.htm

My old man was kind enough to pick me up some of these today, poor chap had to try a couple of different Aldi's to find a top and bottoms in my size.

This is the first time I've owned any merino, looking forward to a toasty ride in them tomorrow!

  • dosent help they dont make small size tops :-(
still picked a few up, got one from last winter and its still good.

  • Stedlocks, they're right. See my mini review of the BSpoke stuff in the Raphael thread here:

If you want a merino top for gardening or walking they're great. As a baselayer, not even worth a look.

Anyway, anyone got Central London top tips for shops stocking girls merino long johns? Is there anything girls especially want from their thermal underwear? And what is a very "warm" weight for merino, but still able to fit under very tight bottoms?
