  • Looking for a steel touring frame, around 60cm st centre to centre and preferably 58cm or less top tube c-to-c, in good condition and not too heavily used. A Surly LHT, Galaxy or a proper dedicated tourer along those lines something like that. I've got a high enough budget for the right frame.

    Thanks

  • How about a complete vintage bike -hardly used as you can see- in exactly that size for just a little over your budget, delivered? See here

I wouldn't go with 650b wheels for heaving touring, which is what I want the bike for, I imagine tyres and stuff would be nigh on impossible to find. It's a lovely frame though for sure.

Does that have braze ons for a rack? Plus are the wheels 27"s? same problem as 650b's if they are, plus I've never found a particularly good 27 tyre to start with. To be honest I'm looking for something a little more modern. I'd probably set it up with a long cage rear mech and a triple on the front, plus change the brakes, so I dunno if it'd be worth while getting the whole bike.

  • I'm thinking of letting this go. It's a 57cm early 70's Motobecane. Vitus Tubing, it does have 27" wheels on it but has brand new Bontrager tires. It's in Immaculate condition.

  • Steel Cyclocross frame 61cm, interested? PM me.

The Empo's wheel size is 700c. There's no braze ons on the seatstays but there are solutions for that (like on Elguapo's bike above).

btw: For touring bikes, 650 is considered better than 700, for smaller diameter and the same amount of spokes make stronger wheels

If I was going for stronger wheels I'd have 26"s for sure, especially as they have the advantage that it's easy to get spare tyres and tubes etc. I'm heading to E.Europe and maybe Africa though so 700c will be rare enough, let alone 650b. Cheers but I don't fancy the brake bridge rack mount, it's a pain adjusting brakes when the mudguard, rack and brake are all on the same bolt, I find anyway, and it never looks quite as reliable either. I've used botch clips as well to hold the rack on but there's nothing like direct mounting braze ons.

Edit. Thanks for the Motobecane offer Elguapo, but 27"s and slightly small rule it out for me.

  • ^ even better indeed. your travel plan sounds like an awesome adventure.

    good luck with your search!

  • Thanks peter v. yeah I can't wait to take off.

  • Anyone else have a suitable frame? Should have said I wanted canti/ v-brake mounts as I'll probably upgrade a fair few parts on the bike and can you get new centre-pull calipers these days?

  • 58cm singlecross tricross thinking of splitting any good to ya?

  • and can you get new centre-pull calipers these days?

Yep. Lots of choice. Spa cycles is a good shop for touring gear.

I'm trying to stay away from cx bikes, I've toured on one before and found it very unstable when loaded up.

Cheers for the link, I hadn't seen that spa cycles site before, looks good.

  • Is this 58 cm Gazelle frame the frame you're looking for?
It's GBP 200 cp brakes and postage included

  • ^ that's former NL champion [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tristan_Hoffman"]Tristan Hoffman[/ame]'s (now team manager at Saxo Sungard) old CX frameset (around 1998) by the looks of it

  • Try posting a wanted on the ctc classified forum, bound to find something on there.

  • I have a Dawes Galaxy Tour frame with some parts but no forks. I bought it s/h to start building a touring bike but another frame came along, so it never got used, and has been sat around for ages.
Free if you want it, I am in Reading.

  • That Gazelle is lovely, I did think yes it would be mine for a minute, but as I said cx doesn't really suit and it's got no rack mounts.

I tried Ctc a while ago but with no luck at all, it seems every second person in the wanted section is going for a touring frameset.

@adroit what size is the Galaxy? Thanks for the offer, very generous.

  • Its 58 cms,

  • I'll pm you now

  • i have a VGC raleigh randoneur in metalic green 531 all through (st i'm pretty sure - it's the 84 model), cantis , not centerpulls, c. 57 on top tube as i rememebr - c. 63 on seat tube.

semi-horizontal dropouts. very similar to this (2nd on the link ) but in brighter green (not sure on year of this one - mine is likely to be later as has rack points - but before the move to 708):
