i think its a freehub

Bingo.

The derailleur I have is a 1/8 one design for a 3 speed transmission, because it's a freehub - no need for lockring.

the freewheel bit is part of the cog cluster, he has put 3 seperate fixed cogs on.
the hub itself has no freebody or ratchet system

?

I think the hub does have a freebody, which is why you can just put any cogs on. The way I'm reading this, is that the only difference between what was on there originally and now, is that before you had 3 cogs joined together in one block, and now you have 3 cogs not joined together and just screwed on one after another?
