800 years since the lords gave the king a slap on the wrist 'cos they couldn't agree on who they would install in his place if they offed him. Don't hold your breath for a peaceful move to republicanism any time soon.
Could even see it as a limiting factor in so far as the apparent power disseminated to the people kept them content enough with the monarchy while much of the rest of europe were removing theirs in the more traditional fashion.
