  • I ride ATACs but ive ridden SPDs...

Its a pain having to change pedals when changing types.

    Much of a muchness really

  • changes back to SPDs immediately

  • Shit, even more undecided. Strangely I trust horatio...

If cost not the issue, which one suits my needs?

I'd rather not add another option in to the dilemma at this stage.

I honestly think Time, SPD, and Crank bros all suit your needs. The differences are more of a personal taste thing.

So get some Bebops. Big metal cleat = comfort.

  • Cost is the only reason to ride SPDs (imo).

Wicksie, look to the polo court. It holds all answers. How many people play on SPDs? I can think of only one. Everyone else is ATAC.

    ATAC = Commoners.

    ^this

  • So if it's personal taste, what are the differences?
These are a Christmas present so I'd rather not try one and sell it if it doesn't work out.

    Anyone rocking the ROC's?

  • had a pair, but the bearings went and a cage bar snapped

  • I've got some ROCs. Bought them second hand off here and they're an old model but still really good. Have aliums on my other bike and don't notice a massive difference tbh.

Cleat wear is a bit of a ballache though, I'll need new cleats pretty soon and have only had them since March

  • I've just gone from the old LOOK keo's to atac's. Mine didn't have any float. They are only on my cx bike at the mo, and I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable having so much float on my fixed...but that's prolly just practice.

Personally I think atac's are overrated (on here). The main reasons I changed were, a) opinions on here, b) wanting smaller cleats which didn't get worn as easily from walking, and c) a good deal on ebay. I'm now pretty used to them and getting on with them ok.

    **Conclusions: **

    • Lots of float that I personally don't really like.
    • Easier to get into than the LOOKs, but less of a positive click.
    • Harder to get out of
    • no adjustability (could be good or bad, can't say yet)

    Main Conclusion:
You'll probably just get used to whichever one you choose. And I doubt it really makes much difference.

If you want you can have my candy bros ones for cheap.

  • Cost is the only reason to ride SPDs (imo).

    dedicated followers of fashion.

betamax was better but i bet all the polo players were rocking VHSs

  • Fashion? That's for the clips and straps crew. ATACs are just a better clip-in system.

  • Hugo7 that's awesome, just what I was looking for, thanks.
I'm thinking if it's much for muchness and the time cleats wear quickly, then spds could be the go. Have yet to hear why they're inferior.
    I had a Betamax.

  • I have been able to pull my foot out of SPDs through sheer awesomness (even with the tension at full). Unfortunately, ATACs do not give in to my awesomeness so easily.

  • For that reason, they are safer and better (for me).

  • I have read all this, promise, and the unclipping thread, but can I get some advice?

Changing from grey keo road cleats to mtb for my 'fixie', I'm undecided between Time and SPD.
I would like a similar float (4.5) and won't be off-roading so self cleaning not that important.

I want easy clipping in/out as will be commuting London's famous London streets.

Which is most suited would you say?

    Many thank-yous.

I'd go for Time ATACs, but I'm slightly biased because I'm selling a set...

there are two types of cleats, multi-release(not good) and single(very good)

  • So we're all agreed then, that the Mavic pedals are the best? Good.

    Damn, just finished the rum......

  • I'm still fighting the Bebop corner.

    Its lonely.

    Wheres Tynan?

  • there are two types of cleats, multi-release(not good) and single(very good)

crumbs, single release spds, right, so which pedal?

  • same pedals, just different cleats

  • Got it. Thanks all, off to the spd shop.

    Edit, cleat clarification:
    SH51 are the ones,
    SH52 only for M858 Pedals
SH56 are multi release and will unclip if pulled hard upwards.

Is there much difference between the M540 & the m770 xt's?

  • Is there much difference between the M540 & the m770 xt's?

Basically weight. I'd just get the M540's for commuting duties.

  • not much difference to be honest, as SF says, a few grams less for a lotta pounds

  • I've tried to destroy my M520 pedals but they have refused to die so far...

  • Slightly ot, but is it dodgy ground repositioning cleats after the 'teeth' have embedded in the shoe?
