car hit parked bike - damage question

Posted on
  • My bike was locked up at work with a d lock through the rear wheel, frame and bike stand and someone leaving the car park reversed into it and hit the wheel straight on. The wheel is basically fine, but there is a slight buckle in it.

Another colleague saw the incident and said he saw my whole bike move forward slightly when this happened but that my d lock stopped it from moving too far. I know I should check for other damage possibly caused by the car pushing the bike but the bike being held in place by the lock but unless there is something obviously cracked or bent in the rear triangle I'm not sure what to look for. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It cycled home fine last night. But I want to make sure I have all the information before I go to the person that hit it (and didn't stop! or come find me and tell me).

Thanks for any advice, trying to tread carefully as I have to work with this person and it's a fairly small office.

  • Get the frame alignment checked by your LBS.

  • Thanks guys for the advice,

I don't know the person too well so not sure if she will or not (or if she even realizes that she could've done damage) - haven't had any contact so far today... Re: evidence? I don't have video or anything, but another colleague went running out of his office yelling at her to stop reversing (from his description it sounds like she hit it and then continued to reverse slightly).

Will head down to a LBS tomorrow. (annoyed that I didn't cycle today so I could have gotten it done!)

  • imho I wouldn't wait too long before raising the subject - esp. if small office - friendly word and all that. Don't want to create bad Karma over Christmas if can all get resolved, or at least discussed before...

    2p - worth.

  • Get one of the myriad of graphics people on here to fax you over a bike template. Take a can of etching primer, and cover the car in bike stencils.

Seems the best way of raising the issue without confrontation.

  • Have you thought of cycle training?

  • Tried it, but was useless. Couldn't even get it to come when I called.

  • Steal her keys while she's at lunch.

Do a poo in a bag.

    Hide (unsealed) poo-bag under seat.

    Return keys.

  • Wish I could train my bike Knight Rider style....

I do like the bike stencil idea, but I spoke to her and to Brixton Cycles and will get it sorted in the new year and bring her the receipt. Only 1 more bike riding day until I go away....

Thanks every one for your advice!

  • check for cracks before you ride it again

edit: then bitch slap that ho

  • check for cracks before you ride it again

I don't think she's going to like that - bit personal.

  • she might love it

crashing into that bike could have been a desperate plea for attention

  • Speak to the person in a friendly manner, maybe guilt them with politeness.

Have you thought of cycle training?

    Parking training ;)
