  • I have been meaning to make an update of this, so I did 130 mile solo trip cross-country, after visintg Grandma and mum's side of the family, just got a train out from Taipei (capital city). PS That 30 miles was a bit of a non-sequiter into an off-road valley path, ended up in some fields of baby bananas and stuff.

I picked up a bike from one of the Giant stores (soft launch, not much info out there) in hualiane and returned it at Taichung, halfway down the country. Stayed over night in ReiSuei, just rolled up and asked in the village where was ok and ended up staying with a family who grew polemos. Awesome cycling infrastructure, each cop station has air, water etc. and signage is really good. I lost my map on the second day at 8am setting out on the second half. Dinner on the first night was at this amazing restaurant festooned with hundred of bike crew and motorbike crew touring photoes. Bumped into 2 Japanese journalists touring by bike doing a cycle report and on my flight into the country, I had a whole documentary film crew sitting in front of me getting shots of sleeping long-haul passengers and were doing a film commission by Giant/Merida.
Second day lunch was in a restaurant converted from two steam-train carriages from the japanese occupation years ago. The scenery was completely breathtaking, it was all photo porn.

    Here are some pictures.

if I were to go back, definitely do Taroko Gorge, which is insanely amazing and possibly do it with other people though I love solitary rides. It was good to see where I grew up in a slightly different way.
