Just joking about cellotape.
Reason why I (and most other racers) always dumped dust caps for crank arms immediately, even Campagnolo, was:

• easier and qiucker to check torque and retighten crank bolts
  
• screwing on/off dust caps can ruin the threads, which is terminal for the crank arms.
  Go for it, if you like the looks.
