  • Hi all,

i have an interesting Bob Jackson frame for sale.

so its a late 70s Road frame with vertical dropouts in an insane neon-pink colour.
size is 57x58 ctc, 100mm front x 120mm rear, was told its double butted 531, cant confirm this myself but takes 27.2mm seatpins so cant be crap tubing.

its a nice frame. the color is just mad. its that sort of burn your eyes out neon pink, but has been faded on top facing areas so its got this washed out look. its something that could be regarded as porn to some and extreme anti to others. I personally quite liked it.

has bits of pain loss here and there, tiny surface rust patches. would benefit from a repaint but i dont think its necessary.

the interesting/tricky bit is that its got a stripped BB shell.

with a freewheel setup threadless BBs or even Blue locktite might do the job, but if youre going to run this fixed the shell needs to be re tapped.
it can be set up as fixed, there is a magic gear, which i had it running on. somewhere in the region of 47x17 or 18 or something of that sort.
this should cost you some money. rough guess = 50?

keep that in mind, and here goes some pics.

clearances with 700c, bear in mind no tyres.

    front

    rear

ah, and the forks in the pictures are tokyo fixed straight track forks and they are drilled.cant be bothered to put the original fork in so here a pic of it next to the current setup

asking for 90 including both forks, headset (tange levin)
60 with only original forks, 70 with only chrome forks
picked up from tottenham court road

prices are ono, obviously, let me know if the prices are ridiculous, ill review.

will take more pictures on request

  • selling those wheels?

    nice.

  • sorry wheels not for sale :)

you can have the 3/4 bottle of water for 68p, or the plastic eyeglasses case for 2 quid.
anything else in the pictures isnt for sale.

    thanks!

  • how about the socks?

  • no offense, i dont think youll be able to afford them.
would rather not mention the price.
    sorry mate ;)

  • OK, I'm tempted by the BJ frame. Not just because it's an awesome shade of pink and not because I'm slightly drunk either. Need to know how badly 'stripped' the BB threads are. Both sides? Drive side? How much of the thread is stripped?

  • right - let me get back to you about this tomorrow.
its just the drive side i think, im not sure how bad it is. on the drive side if you tighten the BB it starts free spinning towards the end of tightening so wont be tightened.

  • what is the steerer lenght for the forks,
and would you be considering selling original forks to me
    for reasonable price..]

  • they are about 20cm

if someone is willing to take the bike without the original forks then yeah why not.
price will have to be 100 - the cost of the bike without original forks. :) something we can talk about if there is someone who is willing to do that

guys ill have a deeper assessment on the shell tomorrow as getting quite hectic with stuff to do at the moment!

    Thanks!

    gemhl

  • ok, if the steerer is not shorter than 195mm i am interested in one the forks

will follow thread and then see how it goes..

  • yep
steerer is a bit more than 200mm including crown race bit, 197mm excluding crown race bit.
    so defo longer than 195mm
    lets see how this goes.

  • has bits of pain loss

Interested in this. Does it come as a spray or an ointment?

    Frame looks lush. Seriously tempted....

  • I'd be interested in the Tokyo Fixed Gear forks, if they somehow became available?

  • Damn I was going to say that. Also interested in chrome forks.

  • ok could consider that.
it all depends on what fork the frame buyer wants to take
cause ive got a dibser for the original forks too.

    BB shell diagnosis
when i tighten the driveside it freespins towards the end of insertion (drive side) but if I compress it from both sides as i tighten it gets locked in the very inside. if that makes any sense.

so my guess is that it somehow got stripped towards the end bit (the inner side on the drive side) but not at the very end. there still seems to be a healthy bit of thread toward the inside end of the shell drive side.

  • heres what hilary says about tapping (different thread)

Argos here in Bristol will ream a BB shell and fit a new sleeve which is threaded for £65 - the sleeve can be brazed or glued in if you do not wish to disturb the finish... This is the best solution for stripped BB threads. But slitting the BB edge, closingup and brazing does work if done carefully; its just rather messy... though a lot cheaper.

  • i've happily retapped threads that were far worse than that diagram shows, i'd just take it to a shop before doing anything drastic

  • Mavic make (made) a super BB designed to work in a threadlesd but chamferd shell, I have one in an MTB and its still smooth (been in since 1990). I was told this will work for stripped framed, obviously there is a special tool to do the chamfer and yoy would need to track down the BB itself (ivr seen one on ebay recently)

  • Out of interest, why can't you use a threadless BB with a fixed wheel?

  • i heard they come loose if you pedal back and forth alot

  • Fair enough - I've no experience with them, but I just googled and this fixed wheel place came up with a review of the Velo Orange threadless BB. Might be possible for whoever buys this:

    http://www.lockedcog.com/products/grand-cru-threadless-bottom-bracket/

  • I imagined you stuck to your bedroom ceiling like Spiderman taking this photo.

  • ill tell you what,
    it was more like this

  • this is still up for sale.

so from what i have gathered there are a few solutions for this:

bad ideas that might work (at your own risk)

    1. just use it. it might be ok. there currently is a bb fitted in and it is tight. I wouldnt do this.
    2. use shitloads of really strong glue in it - apparently works fine sometimes, but also means it will be very difficult/impossible to take it back out

    safer ideas

    1. use a threadless bb (VO ones are £30)
    2. Mavic super BB mentioned above - i imagine this is something similar to threadless
    3. thread the shell to take Italian BBs as they are 1mm larger, the shell can be reamed out a bit
    4. build a new shell interior from somewhere like Argos.

sorry for the bump but i thought id summarize

  • Very tempted. I want a new project that might cause me some grief! If its still around after christmas ill take it, if not then probably for the best.
